Katrina = Cat.5 = Goodbye New Orleans

Still, Bush told ABC-TV: "I'm not expecting much from foreign nations because we hadn't asked for it. I do expect a lot of sympathy and perhaps some will send cash dollars. But this country's going to rise up and take care of it."

pride.

fuck bush,

I wonder if he's still going through with his planned visit to a teeming mass of starving angry people with untracable stolen guns.

you would think that the federal government would have developed contingency plans for massive disasters and evacuations, especially since 9/11. instead, the situation in New Orleans has degenerated into a primal disgrace. it took way too long for the rescue and humanitarian operations to get underway. there was a 24 hour lag between the levee breaches and any meaningful federal action. it was as if bush said, let's wait and see if the states can handle this themselves. for shame.

"At every one of them, there are reports that as the helicopters come in people are shooting at them. There are people just taking potshots at police and at helicopters, telling them, `You better come get my family.'"

i thought about this too..

This can't be real. My mother just told me they can't find my Aunt Joanne.
My aunt and uncle moved to Slidell, La last year. He hated it so much 2 weeks ago he decided to sell his house and come home to Massachusetts. Now his wife is missing.Aunt Joanne has alziemers. All the neighbors were rounded up in one area to be evacuated. Some how some way she got seperated from them. How the fuck can they be so stupid!
My uncle should have tied her to him.For some reason they seem to think she may be with a neighbor .Oh my god I hope she is.

fuck bush,

This is typical of Bush, he's acting like its the war on Iraq or something, oh well it was those Americans who elected him..

Anyway I think I read on the news ticker on the bbc that Clinton is setting up a fund for the new orleans people(can't remember exactly what it said as I caught the last bit of it) if that's true well I would like to see if Bush actually does anything, or if he'll prefer to stay in his comfortable white house where he claims to 'understand peoples frustration' about what's going on at the moment.

As for the looting, I don't blame the people for doing that, maybe if they actually had some support down there then they wouldn't have to of resorted to it, it's all about survival, that's what Bush doesn't get.

"i am 55 miles from new orleans. the eye is going to pass over here eventually. I'm going to put on When the Leavee Breaks by Zepplin. New Orleans is never going to be the same again."

anyone heard from Mystic Styles yet? yes, I know they probably have no power and phone service is almost non-existent. Thought I'd ask nevertheless. TIA

hope he is ok!

They have so far failed to evacuate Charity hospital and failed to deliver water to the Convention center. This is a disgrace.

I think perhaps our Nation needs to reassess its priorities if we are willing to support the implementation of radical foreign policy, costing billions, while neglecting the security of our own cities. Certainly Bush has had a difficult presidency, with two unprecedented catastrophies striking in his term. But really, how safe are we fighting this 'pre-emptive' war while New Orleans is totally devestated? What about pre-emptive protection of our own home?

What a disaster. Let's hope to God that they get these people safe. This is fucking unbelievable. 100s of people will die before our eyes unless there is some intevention.

I posted this before... but if you know anyone who needs a place to start over... my family has two farmsteads and I have a home in the city and we will help them get here... room for a coupole families and great schools and then I have room for a DJ or two ;) I would also consider taking a couple or a mother with child.... please pass this on... I really want to help in this manner if possible.

I can't be alone with this thought:

Anybody else pretty amazed (not surprised) at the complete lack of coordination and response we are seeing here. I mean, look at the situation.. we have zero supplies going to people even in predetermined rescue areas like the dome. the head of FEMA just announced he had no awareness of a large # of people gathered at the convention center on the mississippi. no declaration of martial law because aparently LA state law doesn't include it. the mayor is now leading the survivors BY FOOT out of the city.

Like... are you fucking kidding me?

Wasn't so long ago we were discussing the very real possibility of a nuclear device going off in a US city and what would be done.. Department of Homeland Security? Advisery Alert Level doohicky?

What the hell is going on.. I mean seriously.. Talk about catching us with our pants down we are doing fuck all to help people and we have a debate in the government over rebuilding the city.

good game, what a nightmare..

Long time lurker, first time poster...

I just had to reply to some of the folks blaming Bush. Everything seems to be Bush's fault these days. Now Bush and Halliburton have made a hurricane machine!

The ones who are really going to hang are the Gov of LA and Mayor of NO for being unprepared . The French engineers warned of this hundreds of years ago.

My prayers go out to all... this is going to get much worse folks.

Dear Sir:

Respectfully, I submit that you should shut the hell up. Looting and lawlessness IS the problem. The National Guard choppers are BEING SHOT AT. The NOPD are BEING SHOT AT. You want to focus on the levee? So do they, but check this out: THEY CAN'T UNTIL THE MOB STOPS ATTACKING THE RESCUE OPERATION.

I know you're looking at this situation with concern for the racial implications of the deterioration of civilization out here, but this is bigger than whether people are going to be racists after this is over. This is about rescuing the masses i.e. life and death.

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and blame your stupid comments on your lack of knowledge of the situation. Don't prove me a fool for doing so.

Regards,

Michael Barnett

Ok, yes it is a unfair to blame Bush and my earlier rant was written in anger after watching this on CNN unable to do a damn thing excpet post the redcross adrress. But at the same time, look at the time and effort that has been put into establishing homeland security, patriot act, invasion of Iraq etc. And yet, we were totally unprepared for this hurricane. We knew that this disaster was possible. We are fighting 'preemptive wars' to prevent hypothetical attacks. The fact that we overlooked this disaster is hard to forgive. We failed.

New Orleans is by and large a poor city. And look who is left? The poor, the unemployed, the sick, the elderly, the imprisoned. The weakest in society, the dispossessed. The director of FEMA said something to the effect of '... well the mayor told them to evacuate.' Many of these who are are left behind were unable to evacuate.

We can only pray now, and donate to the red-cross.

And yes, may God protect the police, the coast guard, the military, the doctors and nurses and the redcross.

welcome to CE&P. yeah, when i criticised the federal hurricane response, i was aware that some might perceive it as a general slam at Bush. But, looking at the situation objectively -- independent of Bush's past triumphs or errors -- the facts show that there was a significant lag between the hurricane strike (or the levee breach, for that matter) and the order to mobilize the federal relief effort. lousiana, let alone any state, does not have the capability to deal with a natural disaster of this magnitude. this could very well be the worst natural disaster in American history. it is unreasonable to expect that any state or municipality should be equipped to deal with this. THUS, the federal government should have stepped up.

the moment when most people realized the enormity of the disaster is the same moment that Bush should have addressed the American people and promised the full force of the federal government to help. it should not have required deliberation. (and yes, you can draw parallels between this and reading My Pet Goat if you want.) instead, he waited a day. and now the city has devolved into a hunter gatherer state. this consequence is the result of utter incompetence, and if you don't believe me, then tune into the first ten minutes of any news broadcast.

I agree, Bush fustrates me too...

But it was Bush who phoned the Mayor of NO over the weekend and told him to evacuate after the mayor waited too long...

I thought he did, with plenty of time to spare. Promises usually have to be followed by actions though, not deliberations, as you pointed out. I'll leave it at that.

declaring a federal disaster while the hurricane was still over the Gulf wasn't even close to being enough.

that is an awesome sentiment, and I in florida have thought the same thing, though how do you get it across to those in control of the situation?? I also know of people in Georgia with room and a heart <3

But you know, when you don't have a hundred dollars to spare, but you have other resources that seem more important, and the red cross says no, just money, it gets a little frutstrating. The country doesn't seem to be doing the job right now, too bad there aren't ways for simple citizens like us to make it easier. People are good, what is hard is getting things done.

Don't get me wrong, I know just driving into a town deep in water isn't a possibility, but fuck, there has to be something you can do. I don't see helicopters in full force dropping gallons of water on the refugees. Where the fuck is Bush's fam, Bill Gates and every other billionaire who can afford that shit?

eh, end little rant. seeing people suffer is tough especially when it seems to have such obvious answers.

OH btw, interesting, but, my hubbys unit (national guard) was called up and then cxld. Oh yeah, cause they don't seem to need em /sarcasm.

mother fuckin govt is incompetent.

I am dreading the day a/the big bomb hits us.

I will be happy I am not anti gun at that point, lemme tell you.

You need to protect yourself, cause noone else will.
