Katrina = Cat.5 = Goodbye New Orleans

Word is Mississippi--the Biloxi and Gulfport area in particular--is getting hammered; peak storm surge could easily be over 20 feet when it's all said and done.

The eastern wall of Hurricane Katrina is beating the shit out of the Mississippi Gulf Couast. Biloxi/Gulfport's already reporting 10 ft. of water covering downtown. Such a beautiful pair of small coastal twin towns too. :(

I feel bad for the tech school students stuck at Keesler Air Force Base right now. :(

Looks like I was right about something. :)

Yeah you were, but look at it this way, if it were any other coastal city, the need for evacuation, while still strongly urgent, wouldn't be nearly as strong as for one who's full of waste dumps, poor sewage systems, and is sitting below sea level.

This hurricane is literally going to turn New Orleans into America's toilet. :\

so far i am wrong.

but all analysts are saying the market is showing incredible restraint and that the bulls could run at any moment . natural gas is up20% and oil is steady ,but i look to see a run once we get all the reports back on damage and find out how long production in the gulf will be down .

it depends a lot on how much damage the refineries have taken i also just heard that we are going to dip in to the strategic reserves which could soften the blow but there is no way we can absorb a 25% cut in production long term also the NYMEX has declared a force muejur which means that all bets are off for july futures delivery of natural gas which could force those contract holders in to the spot market

my take is that it will only take a few bulls to run to cause a stampede and my predictions still loom as a possibility

Oil is up about two dollars and change to $68, very nice considering the hysteria about the storm. Katrina come ashore weaker than anticipated, damage to refineries could be minimal.

they are unpredictable. it isn't a gamble worth takin for most people

and it was a 4 at landfall. also, dont forget it killed 4 people as a 1 in south florida

Yeah, they should just have crossed their fingers hoping it would be downgraded and risk letting thousands of people get killed... :\

Mobile, AL also is flooding pretty bad. The entire Gulf Coast spanning from Louisiana to the tip of the Florida Panhandle is practically underwater. :(

Wow, CMB, a hurricane decreased intensity 8 hours after making landfall as a catagory 5. You must be a genius or something.

Of course everyone knew that; I didn't realize I had to explicitly state my sarcasm in that statement, so I'll spell it out for you.

The storm was a catagory 5 when it hit land; therefore, it was still very wise to evacuate the coast. Its eventual downgrading to a catagory 3 was easy to predict, and doesn't make the evacuation any less necessary.

Wow, these unevacuated, unsheltered people are obviously extremely dead in this picture!

If someone can survive a category 3 hurricane standing in a doorway in the French Quarter, someone could survive a category three hurricane in a properly-secured house. No good was done by ordering mass evacuation or herding thousands of people into the Superdome to huddle in leaky, Calcutta-like conditions.

I don't think that this was a case of media hype; the course of the hurricane twisted slightly to the east when it hit land, otherwise the damage would have been much worse.

Crude prices are continuing to pull back from highs above $70/bbl, now 66.50. If Bush decides to tap into the strategic oil reserve prices will continue to go down, but at this point that may not even be necessary. All financial markets are up nicely today, Katrina doesn't seem to be causing much of an economic headache.

not all houses survive a cat 5, and it was likely this would have stayed one for a while, better safe than sorry.

the house will usually stand, but most of the time the roof can be lifted off, we have quite a few houses in my neighborhood who lost their roofs, or had trees land on the house, and it was only a cat 3 i believe that we went through. shut up about it already, they can be very very dangerous. just leave it alone, already.

i am also monitering my investments and so far i will admit i was wrong but this thing is far from over and i think the market is showing incredible restraint its a good thing that the people who know better dont think like me or we would be in a mess

My brother is on a boat just off the river in NO. An hour ago, He said there were 10 foot waves in the river. He said that they were feeling the 150mph winds at one point. He sounded as if he were pretty nervous, but calming down. Two unmanned barges collided at the opening of the slip they are in and now they are stuck there until the barges can be removed....
I'm glad he is ok...so far so good. *knocks on wood*

He's on a 140 foot shuttle boat that had to bring in the guys from the rigs...they were originally in Plaquemines Parrish until they headed north towards NO. Some of those vessels are built stronger than any surrounding structures. (And, I personally told him to get the fuck out of LA all together, but he had a job to do by getting the rigs taken care of.) :\

DarthMom...you heard right. The couple with the 3 year old were on the news last night.

^^ Thanks....I think they will be fine. He may seem ballsy, but I'm not too sure he's going to want to be on many boats anymore...lol.
