Holy anxiety batman!! 8o

This is not my first experience with kanna. I have experimented with it in the past, not extensively, however I NEVER got effects like this!! I ordered both regular powdered kanna as well as a 5x extract from a particular website owned by a forest animal that enjoys bouncing. My plan was to try using the extract as a snuff, however it has the consistency of a tar/resin, so that was deemed impossible. I should also admit that I used some kava kava earlier in the day, didn't have any discernible buzz from it, however it was certainly present in my system to some level. I highly doubt it had anything to do with this experience, however I can't prove that.

I pinched up a few balls of the 5x extract resin and smoked them, producing no noticeable effects. I looked in the mirror, pupils looked normal. I remembered last time I tried kanna, it made my pupils dilate a little bit, regardless if I felt it or not. So, very soon after smoking the extract, I dumped some of the powdered kanna leaf into my bowl and smoked it. I held in the hits, finishing off the bowl in about 3 hits. It doesn't smoke very well for a powdered leaf, it's quite hard to get good and lit. Perhaps this leaf is on the fresher side hence not burning as well? No clue. Either way, by the time I finished the last hit, I was noticing a absolute shift in consciousness. I got excited for a second when I started to feel definite psychoactivity, possibly resembling the very very very very first hints of a 'serotonin something' happening, like feelings I only experience with mushrooms, MDMA, you know, serotonin stuff, for lack of a better word. :p

However within seconds this excitement faded into anxiety, and I suddenly noticed that there was A LOT of 'something' going on inside my brain, and whatever it was, it was far from pleasant! I noticed everything in the room take on a washed-out contrast like someone just turned the brightness up on a TV and also turned down the sharpness so everything got slightly blurry and 'dreamy'. I've seen this before, I knew my pupils must be rapidly dilating. I also noticed music suddenly was sounding more crisp and 3D. I looked in the mirror and my pupils were GIGANTIC as if I was rolling balls! I started to feel extremely anxious, jittery and queasy, like a caffeine or kratom overdose. My heart started beating fast and hard, I felt terribly dysphoric, started getting rapidly nauseous, and began pacing around the room trying to talk myself down. I also noticed some jaw retention. I kept looking in the mirror and my pupils seemed to be getting wider and wider, like I was coming up HARD on MDMA. I was legitimately frightened. What have I done?

I took a gulp of water and layed down in bed. The nausea subsided a lot when I layed down, and the anxiety and dysphoria started fading too, almost as quickly as they come on. Within minutes I felt safe from puking, so I got up and quickly loaded myself a bowl of really good cannabis. I took one good hit from it and felt instant relief. From this point forward the kanna awefulness quickly faded into weed awesomeness. I kept feeling slightly anxious and jittery for a bit after, I started writing this trip report, and now by the time I'm finishing up I feel pretty much just stoned and nothing else. Very slight headache might be coming on, I'm about to down H2O like it's going out of style. I feel pretty drowsy and my pupils have returned to normal. WOW that was a ride! 8(

What the hell? I've never read about anyone getting such effects from smoking kanna.... Most people seem to think kanna can do no wrong!

Kanna makes me nauseas as well, and does the same with my pupils. Though I'm still hoping to find some honest to goodness recreational potential, to me it holds only novelty status as a plant that you can snort which instantly gets you fucked up. You should write that TR up in The Stranger.

Sounds like Serotonin syndrome to me.

Really? Can serotonin syndrome come and go that quickly? I would think if you gave yourself serotonin syndrome, it would days and days of complications, if not permanent! It was literally about 20 minutes of extreme anxiety, but that was it. Once I smoked some cannabis, I felt great.

I tried snorting a very small amount yesterday. Minimal effect if anything.

Follow up report:

100mg (weighed) kanna powder, insufflated. SAME DAMN THING!! Extreme anxiety, sweating, pupils super dilated, feeling floaty, fatigue, and then after about 20 minutes and smoking a bowl, I'm just about fine again.

I think I'm done with this.

Thoughts?

You should of been done after smoking it the first time. Nothings worse to me then a drug that produces anxiety or a come down. Your trying to get high not shitty. I would go find some real drugs.

it would days and days of complications, if not permanent!

One would actually expect a duration of a couple to a few hours. However, what you experienced doesn't sound like serotonin syndrome.

This. Serotonin syndrome. Happened to me about five years ago when meph had just been identified as the Israeli 'Hagigat'. I'd celebrated finishing a big job with three caps of Hagigat: got home to realise I had no weed, no downs, no booze, no kratom, no opiates, in fact no kind of relaxant at all save Kanna and a little Nitrous.

I took a powdered Kanna extract: then remembered its activity on the serotonin front, as my body temperature sky-rocketed and I felt on the verge of a panic attack. A lukewarm bath and breathing exercises helped, and I think it was a borderline case of Serotonin syndrome, never life-threatening. But I realised then that Kanna's mild anti-depressant properties, like those of SSRIs, can be very unpredictale when mixed with other chemicals. Also, I think most vendors are clueless to the strength of their extracts: all 'x5' tells you is that 5 times the volume of that plant material has been reduced to the voume you buy. That's hardly a chemical analysis.

Kanna might have its uses, but the side-effects and cons, even on its own, outweigh them to me. YMMV.
