well, i knew this day was coming eventually. i've been wanting to get off opiates for a long time and just kind of went along with it till now. i went into a doc today and they asked if i was getting pills from another doc. i said no, they said i needed to take a pee test to prove it, or they would discontinue me as a patient.

I refused the pee test, not so much b/c of anything i had in my system other than what they gave me, its that i may have had a bit more(i take about 8-10 norco 10's a day) and they prescribe 4. So I was worried about taking a piss test and everything and my "rights". I don't like signing my name and handing someone a pee test. I don't take any other drugs other than norco's(thank god i guess)

Well, i know i need to get off these, and this has given me the scared straight ability. I would prefer to ween myself off of the opiate rather than go cold turkey. i have one more refill from that doc remaining. Do you think they have already canceled that prescription or do you think I could get it and then set myself on a taper schedule? do you think it's safe to get the pills refilled since there is a refill left? Obviously, if they had to call in for a refill it would get refused, but since there is one left i'm wondering if it may be okay.

I really don't like going cold turkey, but I may have to.

No one can really tell you as far as the prescription goes. Some people successfully taper in a situation like that. Most don't.

Check out this guide to opioid withdrawal. There is a lot of good advice there to help mitigate the symptoms.

Hey powderd,

Sorry to hear about your troubles but hopefully it will all work out for the best. If you check out the linked OD Directory in my signature you will find several threads on withdrawing from opiates filled with many tips, hints, and OTC/herbal opioids (e.g. kratom, tramadol, codeine) which can help ease the pain.

Regarding the prescription we can't really advise you on that as anyone supporting it would be supporting possible illegal activity. You'll have to weigh the risks and rewards and make your own choice.

Good Luck!

Fair point. I should take that out of the original post. the point isn't to get more, the point here is to get off the crap in a manner which isn't horrible.

If I were you I would try to get it refilled. At worst the pharmacist will say that it has been cancelled, but I doubt that has happened (although obviously I can't tell you for sure). I highly doubt that it is illegal to attempt to refill a script that actually says on the bottle that it has a refill left.

Good luck on weaning off, check out the other threads for withdrawal info, but remember that the best indicator of success is you WANTING to get off. If you don't really want to then you won't. It's not easy, but it is very rewarding and if you actually get off the feeling is fantastic not to have to worry about being sick all the time and chained to a pill.

I would just try and get it refilled. It isn't like you are going to get into some kind of legal trouble or something, for trying. I would wager that there is a good chance you will still be able to refill it. The worst that would happen is they pharmacy says the doctor called, and said not to refill your prescription.

Dokomo posted a link to Phreex's (god rest his soul) guide to narcotic withdrawal. It offers a plethora of fantastic information on how to minimize discomfort and get through your detox.

On the other hand, you basically dug your own grave with in this situation. By fucking around with multiple doctors or taking double what you are supposed came back and bit you in the ass. I feel your pain, but there isn't much you can do. why didn't you just do the urine screen? If all you take is hydrocodone, then nothing else will show up.. Unless they sent it to get lab tested to find the exact level in your urine..

I mean, it is worth a try isn't it? What is the worst that will happen? By refusing it they cut you off, but if you gave them the test and your metabolites were too high or whatever, they will just cut you off. But there is a chance they wouldn't even test the levels in which case they wouldn't know you were taking too much, and keep you on as a patient.

I know we don't allow drug testing questions, but this wasn't based on trying to defeat a test or something along those lines. If I am wrong, other mods let me know

If you cannot get your refill, can you source any opiates off the street so you can do a fast taper at least, before you have to jump off completely? If not, there are numerous threads based around opiate/opioid withdrawal and how to minimize the symptoms, and the best ways to go about being successful in kicking.

Whatever happens, good luck. Detoxing sucks nuts.

i agree that this shouldn't be done in a way to misread a drug test b/c i don't take anything other than the opiate. My problem with the drug test is liability for getting it from another location. I didn't know if it would get me in trouble or what. I'm not a fan of signing my name to a blank pee bottle and say do with it what you wish. when i asked if i could consult with anyone they said if i didn't do it they would drop me as a patient. this doesn't bother me at all b/c "ironically" i had spoken to the guy about tapering off the med during the exact appointment. I have no idea where this other stuff came from. I went from asking about tapering to him printing off prescription records. odd. It really doesn't matter. The key is that I DO WANT to be off of it. I haven't been "high" on opiates in years b/c i'm not a guy who takes 30 to get high. i just take 6-10 throughout a day so i don't feel like crap. yes, that's still a user. Nowhere near the 40 or 50 pill a day people, but still a user/junkie in my own right.

I am ready to get off these meds. I may try and fill it. If it shows up filled online than i taper it. if its canceled for whatever reason, i'm going cold turkey. I went down today to get many of the essentials. Immodium, magnesiuum, multi vit, b6, etc. I do not have any access to the benzo's people speak of. I guess i'm SOL there. What about the stuff people say lowers blood pressure? If i was to go into a place and say i'm trying to quite smoking and heard this was a decent option, would that be a good option to use? I'd prefer not to use things like xanax or whatever as that's just another thing to get used to if you get my drift.

i'm sure looking forward to this next few days. I should have started today, took a 4 day weekend and then at least been through most by Tuesday

i don't see the harm in asking for a very short term prescription for bupe to help with the withdrawals. In fact, your doctor should be doing this if he's taking you off all opiates. You need some sort of taper, especially if you were taking more than prescribed. It is absolutely inhumane if he refuses to treat your withdrawals. Unfortunately, many people in the world these days seem to have lost their morals...

Yeah, he SHOULD at least help you taper if he is giving you the boot. At my methadone clinic, if you fuck up enough to get kicked out, they still taper you over 21 days instead of just saying adios, fuck you die slow.

I am not sure of your insurance/financial situation but could you go see your family doctor or something? Explain that you are forced to stop your pain meds cold turkey, and see if he can write you a prescription for a few things to help ease the pain. Clonidine will help greatly with the blood pressure, as well as the hot/cold flashes. If you are lucky he may even agree to like a weeks worth of valium or klonopin to help with the anxiety, as well as sleep. Valium also has fantastic muscle relaxation properties. If he won't go the benzo route (i.e, valium/klonopin/xanax/etc) then I am sure he would write for robaxin for the muscle pain, and something like trazodone or ambien or something for sleep.

Immodium is also IMPERATIVE for kicking, since it is an opiate in itself, but barely crosses the BBB so it isn't scheduled. Taking a high dose of loperamide(immodium) can all but completely negate withdrawal symptoms. Believe me, it works. Also during withdrawal do your best to stay hydrated, try and eat small healthy meals if you can keep it down. And exercise also works wonders. I am sure you will feel like death and not wanting to move, but even going for a walk or something outside can help tire you out and enable you to get some rest. Intense physical activity will also help to get your natural endorphins flowing agian, easing the transition back into the non-opiated world

On bluelight there are a number of good withdrawal guides, as well as The Dark Side, where you can post during times of trouble/need and get some fabulous moral support.

Good luck man, don't hesitate to PM me if you have any problems/questions.

I agree, there is no harm in asking, withdrawals are a legit medical issue that should be treating with legit medication. I'm with dcraver877, BrokedownPalace and the other posters on this, your doctor is sort of skirting his responsibility as a doctor by just taking you off completely. In fact, he is entirely going against his responsibility as a doctor by doing what you're saying he's doing.

If he doesn't like this idea, there are other options...maybe seeing another doctor is one, if you are comfortable/can afford that, suboxone doctors are expensive but there are many options.

As amapola mentioned, if you can't get a hold of some suboxone, kratom is a legal unscheduled option, I recommend checking out The Kratom Thread, there's lots of great info in there about using kratom to come off other opiates, or at least use it to reduce your dose down in a manner similar to suboxone. I've been using kratom and suboxone for the past few weeks and I haven't touched other opiates and I've been able to reduce my dose down.

Cold turkey sucks a lot, and don't feel bad or guilty if you can't handle it. Weigh your options, there is a way. Bluelight is an excellent resource for helping you with your taper/withdrawal.

Hope this helps.

I just typed out a fucking long response and the server took a dump.. again. Dammit

OP- I am afraid I am going to close this, this thread seems to have run its course. There certainly were a number of great responses and suggestions. Please check out the withdrawal guide, as well as the kratom thread. There are also bunches of other threads around bluelight dealing with all aspects of withdrawal.

I empathize with you, and it won't be easy. But it seems you have the drive to get through it, and I have faith you wll be able to make it. If there is anything I can do, don't hesitate to PM or e-mail me, man. I have been thru withdrawals and the ups and downs of opiate addiction for the last 4-5 years solid. Even if you just need someone to talk to, don't hesitate to get in touch with me.

I wish you the best of luck, and know you can do it. If you need anything we're here for ya.

Thanks buddy
