For the second time. What an amazing show.

Anyone here from B'More that can testify the realism of how the drug trade and the drug names were portrayed on the show?

Not from Baltimore but I'm from Northern NJ which has an almost identical style market. The only difference is that we use stamp bags rather than vials. You won't hear people yellin', "Red Tops, get Your Red Tops". You'll hear people saying the stamp names however.

Besides that it's very similar. Now I don't know how the upper echelons of the trade work but as far as street level dealing it's very realistic. I think it's probably the most realist interpretation of the open air NE heroin market you'll find on TV. Even down to ditching the pre-paids weekly and movin' stash houses.

Agree'd amazing show...

I'm not familiar with the war on drugs at all but it seems like other than legalization, there is no permanent fix. Whoever you hit, whether it be the users, the street level dealers, the mid level players, the suppliers, whatever, there will ALWAYS be someone to fill the void that of whomever you just busted.

It sure makes for great TV though. Watching the series a second time makes me appreciate how good cohesive and well acted the series really is compared to the disjointed fluff that is on TV right now.

I went to bmore last year for vacation and actually went to check out a bunch of locations from the wire. What I was pretty amazed with is that they actually shot most of those scenes deep in the hood, you don't see that often with TV shows. The main thing I noticed was the amount of vacant buildings, I can't imagine living in a place where something like 40% of the apt buildings are empty.. fucking depressing.

Yeah, sooo many vacants. Literally almost half of the buildings you see are boarded up. Over here in Jerz I would say that maybe 20% are boarded up like that, some more in certain areas. Bmore definitely holds the title for that. Detroit is a city with a similar problem. It was a city built for 2.5 million people and now the population has dwindled down to 1 million. So you have sooo much vacancy. It takes up city resources to maintain those vacant areas and contributed to theft and drug problems. Shits crazy...

i think thats the whole point though. no one (in "the system") wants a permanent fix. imagine how many people all the way down the line from DTs, street cops all the way up to court clerks, shit..even people that serve food at state prisons, would be out of jobs if legalization happened.

the war on drugs is a decent sized industry in and of itself. hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people , shit even millions of people, would eventually lose their livelihoods if everything was legalized

The Wire did a great example of showing this, especially in Season 3 with the CompStat system the cops were using (similar to what the NYPD uses IRL) and how they would juke the stats.

no one wants this shit to end . prisons have been built because of the war on drugs literally. its fucked up but thats the system in America, too big for its own good and way too big to control/change...

i have all 5 seasons of the wire downloaded and i have seen all the seasons at least 3 times. probably in the top 3 of best shows of all time.

def a great show...and i would say that its 95% accurate on how shit really goes down.

and philly and camden have a shit load of vacants. im not sure if camden has more than bmore due to the fact that bmore is 3x the size of camden.

Ya this show is great. I have kinda watched it in reverse due to watching it ON DEMAND via comcast and I grabbed season 1 from my local library a while back but re-watched it when they put it back on comcast like 2 months ago. I saw season 4 then 5 then 1 and halfway through season 2. Waiting for on demand to show the rest of season 2 and im psyched for season 3 cuz from what ive read on wikipedia it contains all of the street life element. But my favorite characters are 1. Omar 2. Bodie Broadus 3. Avon Barksdale nigga is ruthless 4. Snoop Pearson shes fuckin ill, and 5. Bunk Moreland. I love the baltimore accent on there the word DO is pronounced DEEW, its the little subtleties that make the show so real. So far I liked season 4 the best and found my self a loyal Barksdale and I hate the shit out of Marlo Stanfields crew, but you gotta respect him he is cut throat as hell murkin anybody not takin his package and straight eliminating his competition.

But ya im real excited about the next half of season 2, It is all about the higher ups above the street level drug trade. The greek is a man about his buisness, the dollars talk. And I cant wait for season 3 from what ive read they set up an area where it is legal to buy, sell, and use drugs. The episodes where Bubbles, Johnny and them other fiends are schemin are some of the best episodes and are a good depiction of how shit really is in the hood.

I love how this show is not afraid to kill off quality characters, I dont wanna make any spoilers for those who have not seen the series in its entirety, but they dont pull any punches in this regard. Its no big deal for one of your favorite characters to only be around for 1 season.

I just watched The Corner when comcast had that out and it was pretty good as well although a little dated cuz its from 2000 I believe. But its by the same guy as The Wire (David Simon) and features many of the same characters (Lester Freamon, Sydnor, Prop Joe, Cedric
Daniels and his wife from the first season whose name escapes me ATM, Jay Landsman, to name a few...)

The first season is definitely the worst IMO, but I still loved it. Season 2 drops off a bit, but seasons 3 and 4 are amazing. The wire is definitely one of the most realistic/best shows on tv. Obviously some of it is stretched for entertainment purposes, but for the most part, it sticks to the truth.

I'm from detroit and a lot of people tend to compare the two cities. Both are in severe poverty, yes, but I think they both have their own personalities. Detroits drug market is very low key. you wont find hoppers and runners on the corners yelling shit out, but rather many dope houses spread around the city with absolutely no advertisement. If you want drugs in detroit, chances are you must know someone first. Baltimores drug market seems to be very different from detroits

I've only seen the first two seasons. It looks like they're cycling through them on demand in my area though so hopefully they will throw the next season on soon.

From the two seasons I saw they both started out pretty slow but at the end I couldn't stop watching the episodes.

How dare ANYONE say that Season 1 was bad. Season 1 of "The Wire" is the best television ever made. I honestly challenge anyone to provide me a better season of TV. When Kima is shot, that next episode is amazing.

The Sopranos, IMO, and The Wire are actually opposites in peoples eyes. The 1st Season of The Sopranos was amazing and I think it went slightly downhill every season afterwards. The Wire got better in later seasons. Two amazing shows for sure.

Scully, 2 shows for u to try are on Showtime. Try Dexter and The Tudors. I think you will really enjoy them. I love both!

Haha yeah I'm in Bmore... I don't see it as bad as the Wire portrays it, but I don't smoke crack either... My mom was a Baltimore city school teacher and had to retire early because the elementry school students were so racist, violent and aggressive. I'm up in Charles Village now, the Wire is mainly on the west side.

Love the wire......very real. over the top true to reality.....as much as that is sad, it makes for great intresting TV.
I dont think there will ever be a series like it again. Quality all round, great writers, i wish it never ended :C
