Jobseeker's Allowance Megathread ver. We're all overqualified!

Ive just applied for about 50 jobs. Ironically the job centre may have sanctioned me for doing that if i was signing on. They dont like people applying for loads of jobs at once "as it looks like you are mereley trying to comply with the JSA agreement requirements"

What an absolute load of bollocks, in effect they are saying you need to apply for one job every working day to comply. I think i know which method is more likely to lead to success. I wouldnt blame people if they applied for jobs in intense blasts like i have just done, but then you'd have to make up different dates to fill in your 'jobs applied for diary' in order to comply. The whole concept sucks hot sticky cock, it's a broken, impractical and unhelpull system.

EDIT: 50 applications resulted in 4 phone calls. One of the jobs was out of my league. One theyve allready done the interview shortlist for, one ive returned their call and waiting for another call back, and another just said she'd pass my details to another colleague to assess. Im not sure if im being too informal on the phone or something, but i dont want to come accross all pompous and pretensious either. Maybe thats got nothing to do with it i really dunno but its fucking frustrating. The problem with applying for so many jobs at once is that i dont have a clue which job they are ringing me about to prepare for. I'll have to be more systematic about this somehow. :?

Yes the title was funny that's what attracted me to the thread. If you don't laugh at life now n then well you may as well cry lol. Wow. 50 jobs hope you get one. Are you serious??????? Hey'd sanction someone for looking for 50 jobs? I've heard it all now I thought they'd be pleased by that. I know I'm impressed.

Right I best get on with writing this 4,000 word essay for Monday. Blah!

yes, all it takes is copy and paste the different job titles into the letter, and fire off letter and CV. There are hundreds of jobs advertised in this city, but hundreds of people applying for them also. This mass application thing doesnt seem to have worked though, i think im gonna have to try a different tactic, and spend more time on each one, and somehow get things organised so i know which job people are talking about when they call me back. Im sure that hasnt helped this afternoon. Maybe the recruiters want to think they are special and ive only applied for their one brilliant job at their one briliant agency. I dunno. I'll get something sooner or later.

I had to do similar for my brother when he had been laid off. He has a mortgage so he needed work asap. He went round all the factories with his CV n asked for work. He got one the following Monday, wasn't good pay as he's a welder but a job's a job.

What are you qualified for? What work did you do before n what are you/have you applied for so far?

Evey :)

im not really qualified for anything specific, but have lots of customer service, IT helpdesk, 1st and 2nd level experience. Thats what im applying for as i have experience in the field, and it pays failry well, otherwise id have to do unskilled menial work for minimum wage. It might have to come to that for a while.

A brief aside, did anybody else catch that lil snippet about minimum wage on Question Time recently? Supposedly, if minimum wage had gone up in line with inflation it'd currently be just over £19/ph. The Tory minister on the panel was crowing about how they're gonna be so kind as to raise it to £7/ph. And they wonder why the whole employment and benefits system in this country is a mess and the workers/claimants are all completely pissed off with and utterly demoralised by the whole thing :\

Are you on the job hunt and ready to go on your next interview? Then you should definitely be prepared to avoid the most common interview mistakes.

Dress appropriately, turn off your cell phone, do your research about the company and prepare the most common interview questions. Appearing disinterested is the No. 1 turnoff for employers, according to a study by CareerBuilder.

Also trying too hard to make a lasting impression on a prospective employer in an interview could backfire.

In CareerBuilder's annual study on the most common and most outlandish job interview mistakes to avoid, hiring managers provided real-life examples of the most peculiar behaviours they witnessed in job interviews:

Being asked about the reasons why he quit his last position in a bank, a candidate said it was because he was always tempted to steal.

Another jobseeker denied that he had a cell phone with him even though it could be heard ringing in the briefcase beside him.

The next candidate emptied the employer's candy dish into her pocket.

This applicant was quite honest about his weaknesses. He said he didn't like getting up early and didn't like to read.

Trying to hide away from the taxman? The candidate asked to be paid "under the table."

He must have meant it as a friendly gesture. The candidate reached over and placed a hand on the interviewer's knee.

The candidate commented that he would do whatever it takes to get the job done, legal or not.

This candidate's interview must have gone really well. He hugged the president of the company.

The next jobseeker must have been very hungry. He called his wife to see what they were having for dinner.

Another candidate asked to postpone the start date so she could still get holiday gifts from vendors at her current job.

This job applicant called in sick to her current employer during the interview, faking an illness.

The candidate said he didn't want the job if he had to work a lot.

The next jobseeker wouldn't answer a question because he thought they would steal his idea and not hire him.

"A job interview can be one of the most nerve-wracking experiences out there, so it's important to plan and practice," said Rosemary Haefner, Vice President of Human Resources at CareerBuilder. "Have a friend run through a mock interview with you, asking questions you think will come up and some curve balls you're not expecting. Thoroughly research the company ahead of time and draft responses that incorporate your accomplishments. The more prepared you are, the less likely you are to run into mishaps."

Awh sorry I think I remember you mentioning you were in IT, in gibberings thread I'd forgotten well good luck xxxx

thanks. Something will turn up. Despite my Dad's pessimistic statement that should i find myself still struggling to get work several months down the line im going to find that hard to deal with. Cheers Dad, you've really got the nack of encouraging people and filling them with hope and optimism. :\

To be fair he doesnt allways say things like this, and he is usually quite positive, but just occasioannly comes out with bombshell type statements that he'd have been better off keeping to himself. :!

My dad said something similar to me recently, "many of us go through periods of poverty". They should get together and discuss the various ways they could rub salt in their sons' wounds.

i dunno if they think they are doing us a favour by thinking they are preparing us for what may be a difficult period of time. Fortuanetly i am able to push ideas or possibilities that i dont like to the back of my mind. But they get implanted there never the less. It doesnt help. :\

I suspect our Dads would get on. I just have that feeling they would, my Dad's a Scot for a start, i know thats not a game changer but they would probably enjoy swapping notes about how their sons of simillar ages are coming along, or not, as the case may be.

My Bro' got a 4 week sanction for missing a WP appt. . Not eligible for hardship fund for 4 weeks from last payment. ( ok that payment is supposed to last a fortnight). Told to apply at local authority/ civic centre for emergency funds ( i think this council fund thing is newish).

Two questions
1= do you know anything about this council money ' thingy'.( it's basically the new crisis loan but done by town hall, i guess). You pay it back, obv.
2= DWP hardship fund , how much do they give you? i'm told it's a % of your usual giro,40% i heard.
Sanctions go from 4 wks 1st offence, 13 wks 2nd, 3 years 3rd

I wouldn't have a clue what the DLA forms look like as my Mam did all that when I was like 2 years or summit. And when I was 16 it was transferred to me. Ahhh does anyone remember the "good" old days when we'd have those books that looked like a cheque book n we'd go to the post office to have it signed but we could only go to same post office (think you were allowed to go to another twice). Thank God for Direct Debit lol.

My keyworker just rang up the other day to get the forms for PIP benefit which is taking over from the old DLA benefit.
Not air how complicated they will be but she has arranged someone to come and help me with them when it turns up.
