Jobseeker's Allowance Megathread ver. The Jeremy Kyle Fan Club

for normal jobseekers it is 16,000

for contribution based jsa it goes on you national insurance contributions over the preceeding 2 years, regardless of whatever savings you have AFAIK. You only get this for 6 months, though i recently received a strange letter saying they would extend it, im gonna follow it up.

wow, that really surprises me tbh, esp in current 'austerity' bullshit climate.

Worth taking bets on that figure dropping in the coming year

Why would you tell the Job Centre that you have savings?

you'd be comitting fraud if you lied on the form, and if you got found out you might be in quite deep shit. Everything is linked to your NI number. If you have 10 grand in a shoe box under your bed then obviously thats not gonna be traceable, but what if you get burgled or have a house fire ? They can ask to see 6 months bank statements if you claim JSA, and if your getting interest payments or something, they're gonna want to know where that came from. I dunno what the best thing to do is, the interest rates are so low its not worth saving money, but you need it for times when you might be unexpectedly unemployed. But if you have too much cash you wont get normal JSA anyway. Its a fuckin nightmare.

PT, even when you apply for housing benefit and council tax benefit you have to give them the details of every one of your bank accounts, incl savings accounts, isas, old ones you've forgotten about but haven't closed. The whole shebang. You have to tell them the balances of these accounts.

Also knock, re the how much savings can you have before claiming. You should be claiming JSA (or ESA if you can't work due to illness or whatever )no matter how many savings you have, in order to get your stamp (NI contributions n such), but if you have more than 16k in savings you wont receive any money from them, just your stamp credits which you need for your pension .

Between 6k and 16k they'll pay you JSA but knock off £s or some amount, per thousand of your savings on a sliding scale. Below 6k in savings they'll just give you your normal JSA weekly amount

When I finished work in 2005, I didnt have any savings, and didn't claim for 2 years, because I didn't think I was eligible. Stupid mistake. They've been sending me a letter every year since to warn me that I've underpaid on my NI contributions by about £300 and that has to be paid at some point for me to get my full pension.

I hope you've been claiming something all these years knock, unless you've got some other kickass private pension thing going on somewhere

They ask for details of your bank accounts. You only have to give them whatever you decide to write down. There isn't someone ringing round all the banks that exist and asking whether you have an account and even if there is the bank will say "Sorry, can't tell you that mate, fuck off now".
True. And of course you can lie. BUT you have to also make a declaration that you personally have no other monies than those you've declared on the form. I highly doubt they don't have the power to get the info from your bank if they formally investigate you.

If you are investigated for any reason, obv, this will be deemed as fraudulent.

Also, they ask to see statements of your current accounts for the previous 6 months etc as well, and keep those on file.

They knock back tons of applications for benefits (council/house/JSA) for all sorts of stupid reasons.

When I made my claim after not claiming for two years they denied all my applications because of a £500 LOAN which had been going into my account each month, which they counted as an INCOME. Fucking lunacy. Took months to sort out, and especially annoying because I was actually entitled to money for the previous 2 years that I didn't claim, so had been claiming nothing at all even tho I was entitled.

I would advise anyone to be upfront about their accounts, because if there's just a tiny reason or connection that they can refuse your claim, they will and do investigate your accounts

[edit]
Also, say knock went and paid off a bunch of his credit cards or summat, which brought his savings down to below 6k, so he could claim, they often take that as willing making yourself poor (can't remember NB's terminology he just used), and will refuse an application because you've done it on purpose so to speak.

marmz, that's a good point, will look into it, though not terribly confident of ever retiring as such, and sort of OK with that :D hence rest now!

HMRC have helped themselves to my business bank acct in the past, taken money. I don't think DWP can do that but give it time...

No they can't, and they don't want to either, they just want to know how much youve got so they can assess your claim
Youre still gonna be claiming a generic plebs pension when youre 70 tho, no? (or 100 which it'll probably be by the time the tories have finshed putting the ages up every year).

You need the NI contributions to secure that. Get a claim in now if you havent. Seriously, yo.

HMRC have lifted money from your bank account? Wtf? They don't have any power to do that. They need to take you to court or whatever for outstanding payments, they can't just take it from your bank.

Marmz - The JC could check all your accounts once they are already doing you for benefit fraud but they can't check them just on the off chance.

I know. I agree.

Personally, if it's money outside of your normal current account that's gonna be used for your JSA, and you have money you don't want them to know about elsewhere, I'd take it out, and shoe box it, or have it in an account with someone else's name at least.
