Jazz

At home, I'm listening to jazz more than anything else. And specifically Coltrane. Just so fucking good.

The OP and that Miroslav Vitous: Purple track were great finds from this thread, for my persoanl taste at least.
Thanks a lot.
Yeah, I posted that. What's up?

God damn I can't get enough Art Blakey lately. He and Lee Morgan made some really beautiful music together:

Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers - "Moanin'"

Mate, you already posted that song earlier in this thread. C'mon!

Sick drum solo.

FUCK! Japanese do great jazz! I haven't had the chance to play my horn in a while but it's waiting for the day when I can get my credentials to go to Japan, pick it up again and join a jazz band. Actually, a thread in F&T got me musing about jazz and also a tune I heard on the radio yesterday...

Esperanza Spalding - Little Fly what a VOICE!

and this lesser-known gem off an anime soundtrack:

Adieu

I hope this thread gets bumped more %)

Jazz is all about that improvisation!

Joshua Redman - Blues on Sunday Redman plays so laid back it is insane.

Nicholas Payton - Wild Man Blues Some straight nasty soloing.

Nicholas Payton - Weather Bird Trumpet and piano trading off, just amazing.

Big band is awesome too, and there is no big band in history with more talent than the Big Phat Band.

Big Phat Band - Count Bubba's Revenge Gordon Goodwin is so awesome he writes sequels to his songs.

Big Phat Band - Hunting Wabbits Elmer Fudd jazz. Epic trombone playing and a few instances of Wayne Bergeron showing why he is the best lead trumpet player in the business.

Those Nick Payton tunes really tickled my pink, thanks for posting :D

Melbourne International Jazz Festival is just around the corner, and this year I'm really looking forward to Dr Lonnie Smith, simply because I am a sucker for the Hammond B3.

I love how this is a drug forum and the first few posts are about sun ra (wierdest man ever to walk the face of this earth) and hamid drake (I love free jazz too).. srry it just seems kinda unorthodox that these guys are mentioned first in a thread about jazz... druggies are fucked up and apparently so are our tastes in music. No disrespect to these artists of course because I do admire them both.

Ken Vandermark anyone?

Ari Hoenig? This guy is the most amazing drummer Ive ever seen. Easily the most mind blowing show Ive ever been to when he came to the rex in toronto.

I also picked up this great album with Mark Turner and Gilad Hekselman, Hearts Wide Open.

Since getting more into bass, I've been learning a lot of jazz :)
Playing jazz lines has helped me so much as a musician... it makes playing rock feel like a piece of cake.
You guys already mentioned a lot of my favorites, but Isaac Jaffe is a current jazz-rock artist that I really like. Great innovation: http://telenovela.bandcamp.com/

i know next to nothing about jazz. that being said, i love the kilimanjaro darkjazz ensemble and most of peter brötzmann's stuff

I enjoy jazz as much as the next guy, but since the jazz station in my city changed to a news station, I'm having a hard time broadening my jazz horizons. Some of my favorite jazz artists are Herbie Hancock, Bela Fleck, Joe Negri, John Coltrane, and George Benson.

my favorite jazz player is karl malone

i like when he decides to sing he doesn't use any plural words

Art Blakey

Dat Lee Morgan trumpet.
Dat Wayne Shorter sax.
Dat Blakey drum solo.

Coincidentally, Dat Dere is another good Art Blakey track. So good, in fact, that RJD2 sampled it for his track Rain. This thread should turn into a jazz-hip-hop-downbeat thread. That would be awesome.
