If you stop and search one group ten times more often than another, you are ten times more likely to find drugs. In the UK possession of personal amounts will get you a warning the first time and then possibly the choice between a legal charge or going to a drug service.

Of course the court would just give you a DTO (drug treatment order) so either way, the result is the same.

BUT it's not classed as a legal conviction if you just go to the drug services of your own volition. We don't have those US-style background checks unless you are working with vulnerable people or certain positions where you would have access to a lot of cash. Even then the job ads have to specify that Enhanced Disclosure is required.

It seems like in the US, if you have any kind of criminal record you will struggle to get anything but a basic job with no career path and usually minimum wage. I say 'it seems' but if someone knows better on this or any other detail, I'm happy to be corrected.

It is strange to me that the US does seem to have very strong cultural divides based on ethnic background. Sure, we do have a little of that in the UK but most people would refer to themselves as British. No need to identify beyond that. If you talked to 3 Londoners on the phone, one black, one Asian, one white - I doubt you would know which was which.

They are all Cockney W*nkers (just joking) to people from Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Newcastle and so on. Where you are from is the strongest identifier. Likewise a Londoner would just describe me as being a Northerner, possibly identifying the closest city.

Where your great, great grandparents came from, not so much. Like people who identify as Irish American because 6 generations ago ONE ancestor was from Ireland. Odd.
