Has any body thought about inserting a IV in vein instead of using different veins repeatly and damaging veins or is this just as bad. I don't use just asking. Maybe this way would be safer??

Inserting semi-permanent IV ports for injection is usually only done in sterile settings because the chance of contamination is very high with every action around the implanted port. This is why PICC lines aren't handed out willy-nilly to everyone who needs IV drugs.

I have watched picc lines inserted and you have to have ultra sound to insert the line. That one is very complicated. I'm referring to IV fluid lines like the ones you get in the er for abt or medications. You use a superficial vein and if you can hit the vein you can insert the cannula. Idk.

I happen to have had a PICC line for a few months as part of a treatment of antibiotics. There's people specifically employed for the purpose of inserting them. They have handheld ultrasound monitors. It's a slow process, and even with all the care they take, there's about a 50/50 chance the line feeds into the jugular in your neck and not into your heart. You need to have an x-ray afterwards to make sure.

Even if you did get one in, they can only take certain consistencies of liquid, or else they'll block up. IVing street drugs through one would likely ruin it in no time. Bits of it could eventually corrode and enter your heart.

As for cannulas...They're gross. You can't practically wear one for more than a few days. They start to hurt, they irritate the skin and vein, you can't wash around them and they're prone to getting snagged on things. They're also open to infection, more so than a PICC line which is actually pretty safe once it's in.

That is very true. Thank you for answering my question. I guess it would not be better. I was just thinking about keeping the veins healthier. I cannula vs many sticks. That's all. Thanks for responding.
