I just iv'd diluaded and immediately after my arm started itching and that's never happened before a rash also immediately appeared with slight swelling. I'm getting nervous what should I do?

You missed more than likely, is it warm to the touch, do you have a fever? What did you use to filter your shot

I think we need some more info - how does it look now? Do you have any other problems? How much swelling? Opioids can cause a histamine reaction upon injection which causes itching, redness and hives. Or if you "miss" and not all of the liquid goes into the vein it can cause swelling/redness. Or if you were injecting pills without using a filter it could have irritated the vein. I would say it's most likely one of these things, since it happened immediately after injection. The best thing would be to apply a hot wet cloth to the area and to monitor it for signs of infection over the next couple days (the area feels hot, you have a fever, a red line appears following the vein towards the heart, the swelling gets worse over time instead of better, etc). Don't panic - redness, itching, hives/rash and slight swelling are all pretty normal and by themselves do not normally signify something serious. But if you do get signs of infection you should seek medical attention. Please let us know if you are ok :)

i used to get the same exact thing it never was a problem but i could see how it easily could become one you may want to talk to a doctor about it but it just sounds like a histamine release

Idl what happened but it was similar to the hives scenario swimming was talking about it lasted about 2 hours mostly intense itching and a hives like rash with slight swelling defiantly not a miss I was surely high.

^Yep, sounds like a histamine reaction. It's a common side effect of injecting opioids. It's not normally something to be worried about.

Sometimes I would get a worse one if I was using small/delicate veins (like on my hands), missed even a very tiny bit, hadn't used in a while, or did a larger amount than normal, plus some opioids cause a worse histamine reaction than others. Just try to rotate your injection sites as it's not a great idea to inject into the same area when it's swollen/rashy/irritated like that (I'd be more likely to miss or damage the vein).

agreed.

though, keep an eye on the spot and if it starts to grow/get worse as time progresses over the next couple of days then seek medical attention.

swimmingdancer summed everything up nice and concisely:)

Thanks swimming you were a lot of help I always use the same vein, that's not good?

It is not a good thing to do at all. Switch between injection sites after 1-2 shots instead of hitting the same one 5-10x in a row. It will definitely help with the health of those veins and reducing bruising/trails.

^What whippa craka said. If you keep using the same vein in the exact same spot it cause worse damage and scarring. It's way better to rotate the spots you use. Also please don't hesitate to let us know if you need other IV tips.

Actually I do have one more I just had a rare occurrence. I went to iv and this time when I did it I was trying to register a new vein and before I found it a quick pain happened and right where I was searching for the vein it bubbled up and is still kinda sore 20 mins later. Any idea what happened here? I didn't even register so it wasn't a miss.

That can happen when the needle pierces a nerve, or possibly something like an artery, tendon, etc. Or if the needle is not fresh and snags the vein or surrounding tissues (the needle can dull and get tiny barbs even from trying to register a few times already or from scraping it against a spoon etc) . It's always a great idea to remove it right away if you feel pain, I'm glad you did that.

i just got my dilaudid and i got a small red rash around the injection site and i know i didn't miss i'm pretty sure that it's a histamine release but i don't know anyone in real life who this happens too and i'm certainly not going to ask my doctor what it is oh and by the way i micron filter my shots

Hmm if it's histamine release at the injection site it should go down within a hour providing you didn't miss. If the swelling gets worse or is accompanied by any other symptoms that's when its time to get worried.

^Exactly. Mild swelling, rash, itching, etc are all normal but should go away within a couple hours. Histamine reactions are quite common. If the area is getting worse instead of better is when to be worried.

mostly probable it's a histamine release then.

i experience them, without fail, after i shoot morphine. as has been stated it should only stick around for an hour or so. give it a rinse under warm water or use a warm compress over the area as well to help with the immediate healing.

Back when i first started shooting morphine i got those reactions alot and would even get the hives on that arm at the injection site. The first time it happened i kid you not i was scared shitless as i was used to shooting hydromorphone to which i had never had a reaction from. Thankfully i had someone there to tell me wtf was going on.

Lets say you've been shooting H and you use normally the same general area to shoot in by where your arm bends, but now you're entire vein on that arm has turned bruised color just the vein but all the way down my arm even though I use one spot. What kind of damage am I doing?
