Opioids IV morphine and hives

My friend recently started injecting morphine. I know, he's heard it a thousand times, "NEVER start injecting". Please, stall us out. Anyway, this morning he woke up with these itchy pink bumps all over his legs and part of his arms. At first he was freaking out, had no idea what it was, thought he didn't filter well enough (he filters 3 times, twice through different coffee filters and once through a cotton. when finished it's clear as water), and thought he was going to die. After researching a little... nope. Just hives, which went away completely after 10 hours. =D

What I'm getting at here is 2 questions.
How come this reaction only happened when he injected a small dose, and never when he ate a large dose?
Is there any way to prevent it?
 
IVed morphine from pills MANY times and never expeanced hives or any other negitive side effects for that matter. And that was from 100mg morphine ER pillls filtering one time trough cotton.
 
After injecting again this morning, he got hives around the injection site. He then took 20mg loratidine (claritin) and the hives went away after 2 hours. I know his case can't be special, so if this happens to anyone else know that it's not dangerous, just take an antihistamine :)
 
I know what you are talking about and that happens to me sometimes. I know im allergic to a common ingredient that is used in a lot of pills. Your buddy probably has the same thing going on with him
 
In the history of this message board, this is probably, literally the 1000+ time this question has been asked...It's histamine release, it's worse when IV'd...Morphine is notorious for it...
 
It happens to me also. Every single time I inject morphine I break out in hives, welts, in the injecting area. It also happens when I inject heroin, but only if im missing my vein. Even a little tiny bit! So through my experience, I found it doesn't happen at all if I inject in the biggest vein I can find!! If im hitting a small vein for some reason, I breakout with the welts ect.. but not if hitting a large vein. I suggest u try this and see if it helps. Sounds strange I know, but it works for me.
 
It's been a while, but I'm back and continuing to translate for my dear friend.
Yes, it seems to only happen when he misses a few units. My friend now recalls, the day he got bad hives, he had taken more shots than usual the day before. After a complete bitch of a time involving people he wished he'd never met, he's clean now, but seriously thinking to get on the ride again. It caused tons of stress when he was addicted, but other than that it was all a-ok. He tells me (in his own language), Jesus H Christ that was the best feeling in the world. He says only weekends now, thats all. He loves the feeling but he's not getting addicted again.
