Hello,

I'm autistic and sometimes I have episodes of extreme anxiety, rage and self-injurious behavior known as "meltdowns." Occasionally a trip to the ER becomes mandatory.

Two days ago I wound up at the ER where I was adminstered 8mg of Midazolam IV over a 30 minute period. The first two mgs felt like pure salien. The next two had a mildly calming effect but I was still violently agitated. Then 4mg were delivered all at once and I became relatively tranquil... but that's it! I experienced less of a rush than I have with IV lorazepam. It felt about as as potent and euphoric as diphenhydramine.

What's up? I thought IV Versed was supposedly the pinnacle of the benzo experience. I get more inebriation from a couple mgs of Alprazolam.

Did I miss something? What was I supposed to experience that I did not and why?

i thought IV/IM midazolam was a bit of a letdown at the time i acquired a few ampoules of it -admittedly i was already quite tolerant to benzos. it was still a nice experience but nothing i don't get out of valium, personally. it was just the novelty of injecting a pure amp - something you don't come across outside a hospital setting too often.

you'll probably find as it was infused over a long(er) period of time it would have been perceived as diminished effects. all at once is going to equal a bigger "hit" rather than through a 30min infusion.

do you have a standing benzo tolerance

Experiences can vary hugely, and often don't live up to the hype. Perhaps in your state of high agitation the midazolam was enough to do it's job but nothing else.

I was given IV midazolam before a procedure and all I really got was slight relaxation then amnesia.

IVing midazolam can be very dangerous and is best left to the professionals really. It's a shame it didn't float your boat, but on the other hand it sounds like it did it's job and provided anxiolysis.

I can't see any HR value in this thread so I am going to close it. If you want to write up your experience, feel free to use the Trip Reports forum :)

Closed, PM me with any queries.
