So im new to IV'ing and the whole process is a pain in the ass! I know all the steps already but the most difficult part is once I stick the syringe in, how in the holy fields of the golden triangle do you draw blood!?1? I take forever trying to pull back the plunger that i just give up and squirt the water in my mouth.

Any tips/techniques/videos on this? I think people who IV have special powers that I clearly do not have. I hate always having to rely on someone to do it for me!

As soon as the needle has penetrated your flesh, pull back a little bit on the plunger to create a vacuum. This way when the needle goes into a vein blood will automatically be sucked into the barrel, which lets you know you've found a vein. Once you see blood coming into the barrel, pull back a little more to see if more blood comes in- if some does then you are in the vein and can begin to push down on the plunger. If no more comes in then you are no longer in the vein, so do not push down on the plunger. A lot of people don't pull back until they think they've hit, but it's much better to pull on the plunger as soon as you've broken the skin, that way blood will automatically come in once you've hit a vein and it eliminates a lot of guesswork.

I think it happens to everyone at first i had to stick myself a dozen times, but you get better, its kinda like putting contacts in for the first time if that is applicable to you. Anyway make sure that you dont let the vein roll, to help with this make sure that goes straight through the skin which i mean make sure it breaks the skin instantly. If you do give up though at least snort the liquid :P

It's really not that difficult.. hah. But I guess some people just don't have the fine motor control or something.. no idea. But i've never really heard of anybody struggling for very long before they figure it out. I've never seen any videos of somebody breaking down IV technique.. I'm sure it would be a good idea from an HR stand point and I might actually do something like that in the future because I've seen so many questions like this over the years.

The vacuum technique works really well.. but you still have to be in the proper position/angle. What specific vein are you trying to hit and what needle are you using?

I hold the barrel of the syringe with my thumb, middle, ring, and pinky finger.. Than that leaves my index finger free to operate the plunger. You just move it up and down without having to remove any of your other fingers.

You can't say something like that and leave me hanging! Hah. What do you do different for smaller volume shots?

lol

I recently started making a more potent solution and I'm using only 10 units at a time. To do 10 units, since there's so little room between the base of the rig and the plunger, I basically grip it with the last 3 fingers, and the base of my hand on the other side, and I use my thumb and index finger to pull the plunger up, and I use the middle of my index finger to push it down.

If you try to do the regular techinque with less than 10 units, your fingers may not have enough room to pull the plunger up as you normally would. I guess it depends on the brand of insulin syringe too... but I'm using Terumo 29g 1cc.

Okay yeah I can see that. My shots are usually always at least 30 units anyway. But, I do find that my technique changes based on what veins I'm going in. For example, hitting in my forearm (back when that was even an option) required a different placement than hitting the veins in my hands.

You can also grip the barrel with your fingers, leaving the thumb free to pull the plunger back by placing the thumb just under the top of it, then when you're ready to inject move thumb over the top and press down.

Yeah I do that sometimes too, depending on where I am injecting. There's many ways to do it. The key is to always have at least one finger free to manipulate the plunger. It's also good to have your hand resting on your arm or hand or wherever you are going for added stability.

If I'm injecting someone else I would use two hands; but this thread is about doing it on yourself, but I thought I'd mention that nonetheless lol.

I would totally make a video but.. I have too many very distinguishable tattoos that would out me for sure hah and I like my anonymity. I'm sure I could figure out a way to do it though, maybe with a few other BL'ers help. Something to think about. It would be nice if when we get the same question over and over, we could just link them to the video instead of repeating the same things.

Is the vacuum technique really neccesary if you have very visible veins. I understand this would be great for people with deeper veins requiring more penatration.

Well if you are in the vein then it will register right away. If you aren't it's going to create the vacuum so once you hit it's going to fill. So the only difference would be that some people create the vacuum right away, and others do after drawing back and not being in a vein.

theres a video of two guys doing oxymophone on youtube, its not a tutorial per se but it shows all the steps, also if your not using a tourniquet and live in cold conditions or just have hidden veins and tourniquet can immensely help you find veins
