"Sepsis occurs when chemicals released in the bloodstream to fight an infection trigger inflammation throughout the body. This can cause a cascade of changes that damage multiple organ systems, leading them to fail, sometimes even resulting in death.
Symptoms include fever, difficulty breathing, low blood pressure, fast heart rate, and mental confusion.
Treatment includes antibiotics and intravenous fluids.

This is my leg while in the hospital:

This was October 12th/13th when the picture was taken. I had a weekend planned of going to two shows the first one was Nitro Circus Circus and then Hyperglow the next night. The days leading up to the 10th of October my leg was swollen really bad and was very painful. I've been getting infections prior to this, 2 in the recent months that resulted in abscesses. And the second one resulted with surgery in the not so lucky place of the crook of my arm.

I tied my leg off and hobbled my way to Nitro Circus no pain meds and at the time I didn't realize how much danger I was in come the next day I gave up my tickets to hyperglow and went to the hospital. I was in a septic shock and went directly into surgery.

The picture above is the result of a 4 inch incision into my leg to remove the infection and then the object appearing out of my leg was a wound vac. At the time it was a fairly deep wound. It was very scary seeing the wound vac come out for the first time. I mean seriously it looked like a part of my body was missing and I admit I closed my eyes at first but then out of curiosity took a look (which was a bit tough).

Note: the wound vac sucks out the infection via the tube in the picture, the constant removal of infection helps promote healing. However the nasty fluid collected in a bag was quite disgusting.

After a few bad nights including a night my fever spiked high and I wrestled that demon away, and a cocktail of antibiotics, mixed with ativan and hydromorphone, I was released after approximately eight days.

It's now November 20th and I'm fully healed. My wound is scabbing now. The body is an amazing thing, watching new tissue grow, new flesh, etc is just amazing & inspires me still how much the body fights for us.

As a started healing I took a picture, and then 2 weeks later I took another picture.

It's tough looking at the first picture, the wound was much deeper and larger than that originally when I had open my eyes during the first cleaning of the wound.

This picture is from a few days ago:

I feel lucky now when I look at the newest picture in comparison to the beginning. After all I can compare it now to a scrape rather than an open flesh wound.

I understand my IV drug use in the past year most likely played a large role in my body not fighting off infection each time I completed my antibiotics and yet still it reappeared. I sincerely hope this time around it stays away. I think I have learned a lot about my body, and where I want to be in life (I definitely do not want to be in the hospital or an amputee).

I urge everyone who uses too especially remember that we are not invulnerable. I have had no illness nor do I have any underlying diseases to speak of, for years I had no sickness not even the flu. But this really happened in the span of 6 months, starting with the first infection in my elbow.

Remember to keep a lookout for signs of infection such as raised skin, skin irritation, bags under the eyes or dark spots and/or abscess(es). Abscesses especially are nothing to mess with don't be afraid to seek help!

This go around at the hospital and the past experience as well, as I went to the same hospital for both surgeries, I was open and honest with the staff and they treated me kindly and like a normal human being. I wasn't treated any differently after admitting to using IV drugs, which was a big relief. I've never thought this possible however your hearing it from me - it is!

If anyone has any questions please ask I would love to answer them and help others from having this happen to them. It is/was a very scary thing I went through, but I felt like sharing this would help and it has.

Peace & Love.

Not going to act like i hadnt already asked if it was caused by occurring use or use in the past, as you stated it was due to recent usage. It is very important that everyone does note your experience in the field and how this was all complications due to the idea that it is "not that bad." It is always, always important to have a professional look at an infection because even in this modern time it is possible to go septic and not come out ok. It is also possible for an infection to exist without symptoms and if you cure the noticeable symptoms and stop treatment you could still be infected and there would be a greater chance of antibotic resistant strains arising from not using antibiotics correctly (there is a whole thing about correct usage and how it relates to the evolution of bacteria that is why they are limited to prescription)

I am so happy they didnt have to take your leg, you could have literally been hours away from amputating being the better or only option. Anyone who thinks they may have a complication due to drug use should see professionals. You do not want to have a constant reminder in the form of a missing leg to be with you forever, the story you would tell others may or may not reflect the truth and it would be something you would have (or not) forever.

Thanks again for your reply (accidently deleted previous thread).

I just got discharged from my doctor (surgeon/wound center) today and yesterday from my nurse care so that's a plus. I'm going to start applying mederma soon and I'll update the thread in a month or two and we can see how well that stuff really works on a real scar (brand new one infact).

Well unfortunately I started having pain and swelling in my lower left leg (same leg, sort of the same issue). Anyway I came to the hospital which is where I am now at, and the pain has grown to 5-6 out of 10, and I can't walk to well on it, definitely not comfortably, and even with a pain medicine I don't think it'd be comfortable.

So now I await the blood tests and such and hopefully I'll find out why this keeps happening - right now I had a swollen area on my calf (inner area of the left leg) and it's an infection waiting to create an abscess. It's good I caught it early, I actually took my own advice and didn;t take any chances so kudo's to me! I hope I find out this is going to go away with some IV anti biotics but I really don't have my faith geared there - it's more in finding out what underlying condition is causing these reappearances of infection. No matter what it's better to know, treat, and live longer than to ignore, feel pain, and die an uncertain death.

Just my 2cents.

Alright so things have seemed to work out fairy well.

The doctor came into my room last night and presented me with 3 options:

A) continue the anti-biotics and hope the swelling goes down and the infections goes away
We both agreed that wasn't going to work

B) I could stay in my room he could cut it open (my leg) and drain it
I opted for this

C) I could go under and have a surgical procedure done. <--- staying awake was the much better choice

It took all of 10-15 minutes, couple small slices, drainage/puss, the packing hurt the rest was a breeze. The relief was fairly instant to a degree (it's still painful to walk but it's obviously getting better not worse now).
I felt the pressure relieved in my foot as soon as he cut into my leg.
So it looks like I'll be able to leave today (day after this minor procedure).

Remember to look for those signs I pointed out -I know t just saved me from having surgery again.

I must say I am sick of dilaudid though, however there is an upside to being here again (3rd time now at this hospital),
I wanted to get this nurses number and I'm sure this time around I want to take this chick out, going to have to get her info before I leave or leave.

Hey so yesterday I got released thought I'd just say it for what seems to be becoming a blog now which is sad for it's own reasons (as in going back to the hospital again but I did take the lessons I learned from the first major issue and apply them to notice the signs before it was too late - and I got there before an abscess was formed which is ridiculous - it was still just an infection of liquid trying to form one.

Anyway they figured out it's called strep - like staff infections strep is on the skin as well. Just thought I'd let you know I found out what it was so I'm able to be treated for the actual infection rather than broad spectrum.
I got a pic of this danty little pre-abscess which got cut open but it's so tiny I can't believe what I had went through before and then to have something again occur and think I woukln't bounce right back to good health well that is just insane!

I'm doing good - feeling better, haven't been sleeping well but it's to be expected - feeling motivated, happy, energetic, alive :)
