This conflict to me seems to benefit the leaders of both Israel and Hamas
In regards to Israel, the Israeli government was rocked by some civil unrest earlier this year that was quite serious. Netanyahu and his government have been “troubled” recently. One way that Netanyahu can shore up support is by putting the country on a war footing
For Hamas, they had to have known how severe the backlash was gonna be after doing something like that massacre. But maybe they felt like the more indiscriminate and more severe the response was on Israel’s part, the better…it thrusts an issue that has largely absent from the public mind lately (Israel/Palestine question) back into the discourse (I’m amazed by how many people I’ve seen online suddenly feel passionately about this, how many international demonstrations there have been etc), including pressuring Arab leaders to distance themselves from Israel (because they had been more towards a policy of accommodation w/ Israel in recent history)
I haven’t been following the developments super closely but that’s just what I was thinking earlier today
