is there anything you ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW?

why is it that the hairs on your legs / chest only grow to a certain length, but when you shave / wax them, they grow back to the same length and then stop growing.

how do they know???

"All the hair on your body, including the hair on your head, grows at a set rate for a specific period of time. After it reaches its pre-determined length, it falls out, and the hair-building process begins again."

It's far more pronounced in animals like pigs, but all vertebrates have it to a certain extent

"the cervical vertebrae have a series of interlocking articular and tranverse processes that limit excessive bending of the neck to protect the spinal cord."

How does fabric softener get into the washing machine from the dispenser cup at the top of the agitator?

^

Types
There are two common types of fabric softeners: liquid and sheets. You can use both for a combination of benefits.

1.

Liquid — which goes into the washer at the final rinse, is available in concentrated and non-concentrated formulas and can be used in your washer dispenser or added by you at the right time in the cycle

2.

Sheets — which go into the dryer at the start of the drying cycle and are activated by heat
While both types do a thorough job of softening and freshening, a liquid (like Downy®) also helps to gently protect fabrics from chlorine in the rinse water that can cause fading. Sheets (like Bounce® or Downy) also provide static control.
How They Work
Remember your science class in eighth grade? Well, here goes. The most common active ingredients in fabric softeners are based on positively charged long-chain molecules. The molecules usually contain at least one hydrophobic (water-resisting) group and a positively charged nitrogen atom, which is attracted to the negatively charged fabric surface. The result is a loose ionic bonding and the absorption of softener compounds onto the surface of your fabrics.
In other words, fabric softeners — whether dispensed in the washer or dryer — are absorbed to produce the benefits mentioned above. Whew!

that doesn't actually answer the question. :) when the appropriate cycle starts up the spinning causes the liquid to rise up and run down those slits around the inside top of the dispenser and into the water.

thanks guys! I've been amazed by this for several years LOL I dunno how my ex's did that though, hers had no visible slits :|

While on fabric softeners...

Saying it is an ionic bond is misleading, sure ions are involved, but its not an ionic bond per se.

The fabric softener molecules don't really create the desired effect, they essentially cover the fabric fibres in negative charges, these repel away from each other making the fabric fluff out and feel softer.

Not that this addresses the original question, but yeah..

I heard that if you're driving past a fixed speeding camera and you're going under that speed limit, and another car drives past that is actually speeding, and the camera takes the shot, and your car and the other car are both in the shot, no one gets fined, because they can't determine who was speeding.

Is it true?

riot girl: i was under the impression that the sensors could detect which lane the speeding took place in?

My friend has a friend that woprks in that dept and i can prolly find out if it's important enough to you...

I heard something similar to this, that if cars are too close together they didn't get fined or something.... but perhaps that was old speed cameras...

Going back a bit, the question about why dog shit turns white. From what I remember, its because of bacteria, or maybe is bacteria. Sorry I cant go into more detail, the only reason I remember that is because if you're out looking for horse or cow shit for um, reasons Ill leave to the imagination, the ones with the white bacteria are actually better for the purpose you want them for!

Yes, i have another stupid question

How far do u reckon a helium balloon can stay afloat in the air (say if u let go of it) before it comes back down or pops??

I always wondered this when my helium balloons would fly away from me. You look at it and it gets smaller and smaller till u can't see it

^ depending on the size of the balloon, filled with helium gas is at the same pressure as the atmosphere, and some helium leaks out as the balloon cools. so depending on the conditions and how high it goes it can probably last between 5-20 hours.
