Is there a way to test Nitrous to see how pure it really is?

I used to be able to buy medical grade nitrous and it certainly has a different taste than the stuff they sell in the carts or in the big disposable bottles. Even when you suck the nitrous out of a Redi Whip can you get the real nitrous taste. I wonder just what is really in there?

I think this would be extremely difficult without very specialized equipment.
