Is the AFL 3 strikes policy harm minimisation or damage control

They will lose government funding for not following IOC drug testing guidelines. It is a significant amount of money and support that the government pegs to this rule.

Wow that's a good answer. Thanks for sharing. Didn't know that. :-) Where can I read more about that? Google doesn't come up with much at first glance.

You know i found an article about a meeting between Demetriou and the then Sport Minister, David Kemp. Kemp insisted the AFL make their illicit drugs policy WADA compliant or he would withdraw govt funding....and the AFL relented.. but WADA actually doesn't care about out of competition testing. The AFL did that off their own bat.
I still don't get it.

Thanks for the article. But, as I said, WADA only cares about in competition testing. This is a quote from the WADA rep in that article:

"As far as drugs in sport is concerned, what we're all about is making sure there are not cheats on the paddock and most of the sportspeople around the world, including many, many Australians want us to level the playing field to ensure that there aren't those cheats."

I'm most interested in the reason for out of competition testing (testing in the off season).

I suppose i do assume there is more of a direct motivation that purported ones such as "they're role models" or "we want to discourage habit forming" because those don't seem directly motivating to me.

I see what you're saying, it's part of that particular job.

The activities thing though... does drug taking have anything to do with whether or not you have access to expensive leisure activities? C'mon, if someone's an addict, or even a borderline addict, not saying anyone in particular is... but what do they want to spend their money on more? Going bowling or their favourite drugs?

I'm gonna say this: having more money does not make anyone in the world less likely to use drugs, that is just crazy. Wanting to not use makes you less likely to use. Fear of getting caught may make you less likely to use also.

Also interested in people's thoughts on this: why does the AFL test players for illicit drug use out of competition?

And if there's an objective in doing so: is that objective furthered or hampered by the existence of such testing?

To your question about leisure activities, I would say yes. To this day I wont do things I can't afford and decide to chill out smoking bongs or enjoying a few bourbons myself. I am not well off and there are a good number of things I would be doing if I had the means, many of these activities I would not be using drugs at all while participating in.

I find it amusing you used bowling for an example, *I* could go bowling... How about international holidays, 5 star resorts, the best seats at your favourite concerts or sports games etc. Are you really going to try argue that having access to those things doesn't make abstinence easier whether you are still technically craving or not?

I don't once recall saying money makes anyone less likely to use drugs, but I will argue it makes it easier to find something else to do whether you crave drugs or not. Put it this way, if I am craving a buzz but can't use for whatever reason, there aren't a whole lot of cheap, entertaining and long lasting activities to take my mind off it. If i could just fly to another country on a whim or hit the high rollers suite of the casino managing my cravings is probably going to become less of an issue.

If you want to smoke less I wish you the means, will power and support to do so.

This out of competition testing thing is going to annoy me though. :-)

Do you think there would be many elite sporstman that take drugs that don't get tested for? This being things like LSD. There are plenty of 'party' drugs they could be taking without issue, but instead they go with the risk. Punishment for ignorance I guess.

Does anyone know when testing occurs? Can be game day or at training, but only a handful could possibly be tested on any given day, correct? And when does "out of competition" testing occur... first day back at school?

this policys fuckin bullshit, the juice just makes u better at sports and evry one needs to party wether ur politicians buyin eccys or george bush havn a choof were all human and evry 1 likes to get high
