I would like to know if 'ER (Extended Release) or SR (Sustained Release)' drugs are affected by Stomach acid or Carbonated Drinks? I would assume antacids, fizzy drinks or stomach acids would affect the rate at which the medication dissolves? But I can't find much info on it.

i was hoping I would get an answer here before I had my can of coke fix. so bumpers...

It might *slightly* affect absorption rate, but that's not nearly significant enough to worry about it. Just drink when you want to lol.

May I ask, which XR med are you using?

I have used ER OPs very frequently and have never noticed any change in the effects from soda or carbonated drinks, so...

Yes, the acidity of your stomach affects the absorption rate of ER/SR medications. While taking an antacid may help absorption for IR meds, I think it would be the opposite for ER meds. In theory, the carbonation in a soda may help the breakdown of a pill, but it also dilutes your stomach acid, so...

I think it's rather inconclusive, and even if it does affect absorption, I doubt it's by much.

50th post, I'm now a blueligjhter. Woo.

I'm using Tramal SR 200mg. Thanks for your response. I was wondering if you know why it's only affected "slightly"? Because I thought the corrosive nature of stomach acid or carbonated drinks would dissolve the Sustained Release tablet a lot faster than if you had drank say milk or antacid.

Thank you guys for your help.

And grats on your 50th post Opiator

i thnk you are over-thinking the situation! there wont be much of a difference either way

I've written this on BL before but when I take my Opana ER in the morning, I'll cut half a pill into 3 or 4 pieces, place under tongue for awhile and swallow with a cold Diet Coke. I'm convinced it makes the pain med take effect quicker. Those things (Opana ER, yes the newer sucky ones) are notoriously slow at getting going and I really need it to work once I wake up in the morning. Very ouchy!!

I swear to god I answered this. I've been having deja-vu with threads aaallll day.

I'm going to say what I said the first time I experienced this; the difference, if any, is negligible. Your stomach acid is roughly the acidity of most soft drinks, so though drinking one that is of a lower ph than your stomach contents would lower overall ph, I don't think it is really going to make that much of a difference.
