Was going to do a thread about the Internet asking whether it's taken over our lives, but Raasy kinda beat me to it with something similar n I don't really want to step on anyone's toes, so to speak.

Basically it stems from that happened a few weeks ago n really bloody infuriated me. Beginning of May a few people told me they were taking time off the net so I thought I'd follow their lead n see how long I could actually last without my mobile phonr. I got a new watch batter for a watch that I've had since age 7, n basically had everything changed on it over the years. I put it on n put my phone upstairs. I admit I popped up now n then encase the school phoned over little one.

Then POP letter through door, child tax credit renewals (Mams you'll understand this process). I thought "OK, I'll renew this by phoning them so I phoned them TEN FLIPPING TIMES with the same result. In a nutshell an automated system that says "go online n do it." Now I'm old fashioned in some ways I prefer talking with someone ON THE PHONE I hate how they try n force people not to use the phone n to go online (maybe subject for another thread?) so I ended up using my magnifyer n posting the form. I know that's quite a simple process but the point is I was trying not to go online n they were trying to force me to so if I had not had the paper copy I'd have had to go online or lose my entitlement - £62 a week is a lot of money to lose when you're almost £7,000 in debt).

I'm rambling off. It's not just the tax credit though - everything is online. TV ads have links to the net, everyone's on Facebook n people take Facebook so damn personally. I've had my best friend of 20 years break friends with me n not spoken in two years because I removed her from my Facebook list (her vile remarks towards addicts was too much to deal with n rather than go at her I thought I was doing the mature thing because I could not constantly read her negative bullshit over n over again).

Even my bank has wrote to me (yes I do Internet banking n found it beneficial) to say I'll no longer have credit card statements n they want my E-mail address. Sorry but I'm not having my bank E-mail me my financial details I would prefer them the old way.

I've joined TOtal Fitness n even most of their communications is guess where? The Internet (Facebook like page).

Knock, knock
"Oh hiya Mam, how are you?"
"What's wrong"
"Nothing's wrong, why?
"You haven't replied to my text (sent an hour ago, by the way)
Oh I know I'm trying not to use my mobile to see how long I can last it's not healthy all this Internet usage."

My mam laughs n teases "you're face is permenently stuck to that phone you'll never do it."

But seriously that's what society has become n I never realised it until I took those four days off from the Internet. We, as a society, have become totally obsessed with the Internet n can't live without it. The virtual world is now our reality.

Back in 1998 when I becsme obsessed with Internet chat rooms people laughed at me n tried everything in their power to get me off it. Now it has become them, it has become ALL OF IT. I sometimes think if it had not been for the Internet I'd have travelled a different path. I rejected all my friends unless they went on the net. I just completely cut contact with all of them n became fully fledged addicted. It was exciting. But now we live our lives through the Internet; mobile phones, tablets, watches, PCs, laptops, even our thoughts are intertwined with the net.

How many people think "Oh ace this happened, I better Facebook that!" Or yay we're on a night out - let's take thousands of pictures to show we're having an ace time!" or "I wonder how Wendy's doing let's check her Facebook for activity (instead of calling round for a cuppa as we once would?

So has the net changed taken over our lives n ruined everything n become the new "reality" or simply enhanced reality for the better??? What do people think? Do you feel yoyr life would be better / worse / the same without the net? Lastly in what ways has the net benefited / ruined your life? Do you have any interesting net stories similar to this post if so lets hear them. This post has taken my 40 minutes to write :)

(I wish I had made a thread now as this wi get lost but hay ho lol)

It is incredibly convenient for communication and information, and therefore it's mainstream popularity has accelerated. Nothing wrong in that. It just makes life easier for everyone in so many ways.

It also leads people to become dependent upon proprietary technology, which is bad.

We really need a programme of de-necessitisation, to ensure that nobody is prevented from living life to the full for want of an Internet connection.

It's like adverts on the telly: when they first came out, they were simply adverts on the telly (albeit using all the dodgy psychological stuff they do); once a generation grew up with adverts on the telly around them from birth, they become something much more insidious and hard to see (like a fish seeing the sea), reaching their tendrils deep into our minds. I see the same process happening now with social media/internet - that's not necessarily a bad thing in itself (change is life), but i worry when i hear things like that facebook 'research' where they manipulated people's newsfeeds (eg putting bad news stories lower) to measure if would have an effect on the moods and behaviour of the people (and that's just what they tell us about); and also things like the filter bubble effect.

I think people need to wake up and fight back to recapture the internet before it's too late, and the cumulative effects of mind manipulation mean it wouldn't even occur to us to do such a thing.

(not that i'm doing anything i hasten to add ;) - though i quite like that MAIDSafe idea (decentralised uncrackable internet with no physical servers))
