Is Methylone an Amphetamine or Cathinone?

Seeing the chemical name 3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylcathinone it seems Methylone is a cathinone, however i wonder why they call it bk-MDMA... that makes it sound like an analogue of MDMA. Wouldn't it be more accurate to call it MDMC?

So, like the topic states, which is Methylone classified to? Amphetamine or Cathinone?

My chemistry is lacking, so even though its a cathinone, because its a beta ketone it's an analogue of MDMA?

I thought it had to be in same chemical family to be an analogue (i.e. PEAs, Tryptamines, Amphetamines, Cathinones, etc)...
Isn't MDMA an analogue of methamphetamine? And Mephedrone an analogue of Methcathinone?

No, it's a cathinone because of the beta ketone. It's like MDMA in every other way. Analog is a legal term, not a chemical one, at least in this context.

Most cathinones are amphetamines (except ones with longer side chains, buphedrone MDPV etc). Not all alphetamines are cathinones. All of the above are phenethylamines.

Shulgin already named something MDMC, so that's why the keto-MDMA isn't called that.

Oh i get it, fryingsquirrel thanks for clearing up that terminology for me... i thought "analogue" was both a legal and chemical term..

So, all cathinones, ampehtamines have the PEA amine in it. i see now, looking at the chemical diagrams makes a lot more sense.
