is it possible to be a social smoker and not get addicted?

I think it all depends on how often you are partying. I still enjoy a cigarette when I am drinking or around people that are smoking but that is few and far between these days though it has not always been like that. I smoked a pack a day for about two years buthve not been addicted for almost as long presently.

It just depends on how often you are socially smoking.

I have an odd relationship with tobacco.

Didn't smoke my first until I was 19. Didn't try it again for another two years and only then it was in combination with MDMA. Went through a brief period (like, two weeks) where I smoked every day a couple years ago before getting bored, not smoked since until I went to Amsterdam Open Air couple weeks back where I got through 20 a day.

I've not smoked since.

*shrug*

Yeah, being 19 and deciding to take up smoking is pretty odd man. Would have thought you would have the common sense not to by then.=D

Nasty smelly rubbish, i need to get one of those e-cig things. infact i could probably give it up completely without too much effort

E-cig is the way to go it has worked for many lifetime smokers I know personally including my father who I would have never thought it possible to quit after several failed attempts during various stages in his life. It is pretty much a godsend for those headed for lung cancer that just can not quit.

thats the problem, I'm partying a hell of a lot more these days and thats mainly down to being single. my ex didn't smoke at all so I didn't smoke at all when I was with her. I know my own body tho and I'm pretty sure I won't get addicted. I find it hard to get addicted to anything lol

May I suggest disco?

For me smoking went like:

1) Started smoking at ~16. Smoked every now and then for months not knowing you had to inhale into your lungs rofl :D
2) Then someone explained how to smoke properly, smoked a whole Marlboro Red this way in about 20 seconds, nearly threw up, said tobacco was the devil and I'd never touch it again in my life...
3) ... The next day I started smoking every now and then, sometimes a few cigarettes in a day, sometimes none for a few weeks, this continued for the next year or so.
4) Discovered the wonder that is cigarettes while drunk or on stims, started smoking heavily whenever high/drunk on whatever, but still didn't smoke much when sober. It stayed like this for years...
5) Then I started taking opiates every day and did so for long periods of time last year in particular, as a result was smoking a lot every day since cigarettes on opis = <3.
6) Now I smoke every day regardless, just got used to it.

It's possible and I did it for a long time but if you ever slip into smoking every day for some time you'll start to crave 'em all the time regardless of how you felt in the past and it'll quickly become an all the time thing.

^ He knows it.

In my experience... it just takes a little nudge. Just be aware that the potential for addiction is there & it will most likely happen eventually.

In my case it was anxiety that made me get addicted to smoking. I had smoked for 7 years socially without getting addicted & then went through some shit & ended up smoking 20 a day.

The way I used to stop myself getting addicted, was if I woke up in a morning & my first thought was "I want a cigarette" ... I would stop smoking for a couple of months.

I think it is possible deano88, i know of several people who used to do that and didnt go on to become full-time smokers. I tried to do it myself but would allways got caught out sooner or later, one weekend or another you're gonna end up with some cigs left over on a monday morning, what are you gonna do if you get a craving for a cig? throw them out and 'waste money' (you've allready wasted it really) or use them, and then think that you might as well carry on for the rest of the week after that, then thats it, you've become a full time smoker.

I am currently doing something simillar with e-cigs, but with far more success, they seem much easier to master and not become addicted to, provided you start the day nicotine free it is piss easy to stay that way. It creates cravings when nicotine leaves your body so if you dont inhale any nicotine to start with any cravings are going to be exteremely mild at worse. A drink of water will get rid of them.

Im currently just smoking after work, and on my days off, if im going to having a bit of this, or a bit of that, and because it creates extra stress at work, worrying about having enough time to smoke and eat and perform bodily functions during my breaks (there isnt enough time!!) i can easily get through the working day without smoking, and feel better for it tbh.

Save them for next weekend. self control

if I have any left from weekend which I usually do I just save them for next time I go out. The urge to have one sober is just not there..... yet

I was never able to do that with tobacco, however i am finding that with e-cigs that if i leave for work without smoking them first thing in the morning then i can easily get through the rest of the day without them. I have more self control over ecigs than many other things, or maybe it is something i am gradually beginning to acquire, i dunno, im still at the stage with some other things, like stims, if i have them i will take them night after night (if i dont have work the next day), when i know that really isnt smart at all. I think finally getting another job will help with some self control issues.

Two tips.

Stop smoking, before you become addicted.

Buy an E-Cig.

Opiates, tobacco, the addictions that stay with you in some form even if you kick em - they both creep up on you, it takes ages using them to have any sort of addiction IMO, easy to stop them any time, 100% in control, but then one day it's like an overnight change and suddenly there's 0% of you that has the capability to stop or any desire to really.

In my experience the stuff that tends to feel the most moreish in the short run like stims and such are a pain in the ass but if you got good willpower anyone can at least take a break, it's the stuff that's sneaky and takes a while to get a hold of you that's a bitch because by the time you're strong enough to leave it all behind you decide not to anyway ;)

Very true, and one of the worse things ime is that you can end up in a kind of neither one thing or the other state, which is quite troublesome really, when you might know that you should stop or even want to stop, but havent quite got the 100% commitment to going through with it, it makes the whole thing much more drawn out and difficult than it needs to be, and it irritates the hell out of other people too when you cant even make a proper decison and stick to it.

It's a hell of a lot easier if you have no doubts and are 100% determined and commited to quitting or not getting addicted in the first place. Then it's another thing alltogether maintaining that over time, as it's all too easy to slip back into regular dayly habits. I'm just dabbling in the lighter ends of both substances atm, even after being enslaved, even that type of usage is playing with fire, and im a fucking idiot for doing so, but i am keeping my eyes open and my guard well up now.

Exactly as a very young smoker I smoked my mother s cigs robbing a few here and there from a very young age and its been the biggest struggle of my life kicking them. They r so sublte and powerful. I find myself smoking a few j'S every second weekend and most of the allure is to get at the tobacco through a proxy. Then you set yourself up for a few days un easy after wards . They are the hardest substance to kick for anyone that started very young I would say. Very hard to let go of all smoking . I sometimes smoke cigars when drunk I don't even enjoy them its just hard to let go but I am off cigs nearly a year.

I started smoking when i was 19 and away on holidays overseas. I went from zero cigs to 2 packets a day overnight. Then when i got back home i started clubbing and u could smoke indoors then so i was in smokers heaven. Smoked for another 9 years tried to quit 3 times but couldn't do it, the cravings were too much. Then one month before i turned 29 i saw a drug and alcohol counsellor and he recommended wear two nicotine patches and chewing nicotine gum. The first 3 months were hard but i kicked my nicotine habit. 5 years on i still wear one nicotine patch daily but i don't smoke at all. Also i had a drug induced psychosis when i was 21 so if i can quit smoking anyone can quit smoking believe me
