Benzos is it possible that nicotine actually potentiates benzos for me?

i know it goes against the fact that nicotine + benzos = bad, but every time i lie back with a newport on a few xanny bars, i feel fucking awesome and have always felt a much more potent long lasting benzo effect.
wtf bruh?

It has been proven over and over again that cancer sticks make benzodiazepines less effective, less potent, and a shorter duration. Your body metabolizes the drugs much quicker in the presence of nicotine. I can tell you from my own experiences that smoking cigarettes almost instantly sobers me up when on benzos.

So yeah, it does the opposite of potentiation, and your experiencing what is known as placebo.

Excerpt from source above:

Cigarette smoking can affect the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of many psychotropic drugs.

Increased clearance of the benzodiazepines alprazolam, lorazepam, oxazepam, diazepam and demethyl-diazepam is found in cigarette smokers, whereas chlordiazepoxide does not appear to be affected by smoking.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) present in cigarette smoke induce hepatic aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylases, thereby increasing metabolic clearance of drugs that are substrates for these enzymes. PAHs have been shown to induce 3 hepatic cytochrome P450 (CYP) isozymes, primarily CYP1A1, 1A2 and 2E1. Drug therapy can also be affected pharmacodynamically by nicotine. The most common effect of smoking on drug disposition in humans is an increase in biotransformation rate, consistent with induction of drug-metabolising enzymes.

^it doesn't say clonazepam or temazepam, though, does that mean that nicotine doesn't affect those particular benzos' effectiveness?

@OP do you smoke daily? if so then you probably just got used to that feeling, and you enjoy it, so you assumed that it was potentiating it since you never noticed any significant decrease in the effects. otherwise? placebo, plain and simple.

thats why i stick to temazepam lool

i need to stop smoking cancer sticks though

I've noticed since using tobacco again (to mix with weed) that my highs from opiates don't last as long.

I usually get a real nice buzz from my first cone, but it drops suddenly. Back when I was just using straight green in my vape the high would creep up on me and plateau for much longer (this is all whilst being high on opiates).

Definetly need to go back to green vapes.

Nicotine is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) and potentiates any psychoactive substance and enhances neurotransmitter activity. It inhibits the breaking-down of the chemical transmitters in the synapse.

I'm probably wrong about this idea but if nicotine causes benzos to be metabolized quicker wouldn't this increase their effects temporarily but make them leave your system faster?

Sorry but nicotine is not a maoi, the harmala alkaloids found in tobacco act as the maoi. The interaction between nicotine and the maoi found in tobacco make it extremely addictive

Nah, sounds like it's just in your head man. Nicotine induces benzodiazepines, so it kicks them out of your system quicker. Obviously, it couldn't make your benzo of choice last any longer and if anything, it would shorten your buzz. Smoking cigs when I'm trying to sustain my benzo buzz is a no-go.

Well said :)

would this be the same for etizolam?

ive never took them without smoking on them, as i am a nicotine addict anyway, gonna have to give it a try not smoking while on them

If smoking cigarettes makes all the benzos above in the study I quoted less effective, then I would think it's pretty safe to assume that for the most part, smoking cigarettes will have a negative effect on the majority of benzodiazepines.

As a person (assumably) addicted to cigarettes, the relief and pleasure you get from smoking that cigarette makes you feel relaxed... And feeling chilled out when already on relaxing drugs is... Relaxing. In the end, it will decrease the drug's effects, but momentarily you may feel 'higher'.
