It was filled May 18th 2009 and says use before May 18th 2010. Should this be any good and how much should I take because of the potency loss? I have the peaches (.5mg) tablets.

Somebody please answer.

As long as they have been kept in a bottle, or somewhere equally as protective, they will be fine. I have taken pills that have expired 15+ years ago and noticed no potency loss. As long as they were not exposed to water, excess heat, or excess light, they will be just fine. Start off with what you would normally take because they shouldn't be any weaker than they originally were. The expiration date on the bottle is merely due to FDA regulations and does not mean they just automatically go bad the day after or something.

You should be good to go.

In some cases, I thought some drugs start to break down and form other poisonous drugs and toxins. I may be wrong but I'm sure that's years after expiration, not just a single year.

yup. they should be peachy. i've gotten high off pills that were prescribed before i was born. like BrokedownPalace said, didn't feel any weaker at all.

Most Rx'd medications (with the exception of syrups/liquids and things such as antibiotics/antiparasitics/etc.) are guaranteed to be effective 6 months after the expiration date. With your Xanax, it'll be fine; benzo's are (or seem so, by the way their chemical structures look) pretty stable chemically, so they should be good up to around May 2012. After that, the alprazolam will start to break down and effectiveness will start to decrease, but slowly.

I had some xanax that expired more than a year ago (according to the label)
and they were starting to soft and crumbly. I suspect the humidity got to
them but the tablets were still effective just not as strong.

Fort he soft and crumbly xanax, yeah, it sounds a lot like humidity. As for drugs in general, even reactive drugs, they are usually stored in a non-reactive "container" such as a gel cap or compressed with non-reactive binders.

Let me put it this way: do you honestly think third world hospitals are throwing out millions of dollars of drugs that aren't used by the date on the bottle (if there is one). You will be fine.

You'll be fine.

Exactly. My gastroenterologist gave me some samples he had of my colitis medication so I wouldn't have to pay for it (it was brand name stuff so an Rx would be pretty $$$). They were expired, but he was like "ehh, they just put that date on there to cover their asses so they can't be sued for ineffective meds. they're in perfect condition and will be for another year or two."

yep. They expire so you will buy new one, cover their asses, and if stored properly will last decades.

They will break down to chemical reaction such as light, heat, moisture, etc...

The Xanax should be good to use, but I really don't like these kinds of questions in BDD.
