Is cannabis suitable as an antidepressant?

No THC is quite bad my man, it's just there for 'teh funnies'. Most of the positive (medical) effects come from CBD and CBC (plus a whole bunch of other stuff in there). Not that this is in any way on-topic or anything.

Another thing, Heroin gets you high too. Are you suggesting that it should be used as an antidepressant?

I'm pretty sure that you are pretty confused. CBN & CBD are LESS psychoactive and more like "painkillers". THC would be the candidate for anti-depressant qualities.

And yes, heroin would make a GREAT antidepressant. Just like Cocaine did in Freud's time. DUH, did you REALLY ask that, lol.

I've moved this branch into CD to keep the B&D thread on-topic.

I do agree that cannabis isn't a good long term treatment for depression, but I don't think any drug is suitable for such a thing in the majority of cases.

In the shorter term, I think the incredible variation between individuals means that cannabis will be useful for some and counter-productive for others. Regular cannabis use certainly reduces my ability to cope with life.

i think cannabis isn't a good antidepressive drug because of it's "depending" effects.
Some strains make you feel happy, others make you sleep, others make you active and so on.
Plus, i find long-term cannabis use could lead to anxiety, especially with extremely good strain, in some people (including myself)
So i think cannabis coould help with depression in short term use (1-2 days) and withouth building a tolerance.

It can be really good, main problem being that it fucks majorly with most people's motivation and aspirations which can be more depressing. 'Shit man all Ive done is sit round and smoke weed for 2 years' and similar thoughts may occur.

It really depends upon the person. If one has a psychotic disorder its not a good idea.

Many types of neurosis can be escalated too, sometimes into psychosis. It's happened to a friend of mine and although mostly ok now, at the height of it he was sectioned for a year.

For myself, cannabis and its extracts are an amazing antidepressant.

I am still feeling OK, and I haven't gotten stoned at all today.

It's much different than taking something where you'll have physical withdrawals if you go a few hours without it.

It's definitely not for everyone but works great for me. I'm about to get stoned for the first time today. %)

If we're judging cannabis by the same standard the medical community uses to judge the efficacy of any drug -- the percentage of people who achieve and sustain the desired effect with a minimum of intolerable or unhealthy side effects -- then I'd have to say cannabis is a pretty middling antidepressant. It's down there with buspirone and trazodone -- good for niche cases whose depression is tied to specific activities or mental states, but not quite the right fix, and all the wrong side effects, for most depressed people's use.

I think it definitely makes me less frustrated, because I have ADHD, and this drug ameliorates my naturally low tolerance for boredom. But I've taken other drugs that have been far more reliable at making me less likely to feel down or joyless.

Marijuana is an intensifier. It tends to make states and experiences of all kinds feel more salient. It's like MSG for your entire nervous system, instead of just your taste buds. It's really a drug best left to the mentally healthy, because there is ample case literature of it exacerbating pretty much any psychiatric illness, major (unipolar) depression being one of them.

It depends on the person. For some people, it makes the depression worse and brings on anxiety issues and paranoia. For others, it functions as a fine anti-depressant with virtually no side effects.

Ever since I started smoking weed, I've been a much happier person than I ever was taking Zoloft. They say that drugs can't cure depression; that they only mask the symptoms. I believe this is true in the case of most hard drugs such as heroin. At the same time, I think cannabis stands apart from most other proposed "antidepressants." Instead of merely "blocking out the bad feeling" I find it helps change my perspective of things during the high moment. I know I sound all spiritual and hippie'ish saying it, but I believe that the concious act of embracing that moment is the true difference between medicating to feel better and medicating just to get stoned for a couple of hours!
