Is cactus an MAOI? Dangerous to take with certain things?

Hi

I read somewhere that some of the alkaloids in san pedro/peruvian torch may be MAOIs. Does this mean it would be dangerous to take cactus with something like aMT or MDMA?

I remember reading that the maoi chemicals were in the core of the cactus. I believe even if you juiced the 'cob' of the cactus the Maoi may still be minimal though....I don't believe there is much of the Maoi chems even in the core.
Probably not much to worry about

If cactus contained an MAOI, it would be its own potentiator and people would report that raw cactus is quantitatively more potent than the equivalent extracted mescaline. On the contrary, most reports I see state something to the effect that there are hidden "mescaline friend" alkaloids (not MAOIs) that qualitatively change the nature of a trip if whole cactus is consumed instead of purified mescaline on its own.

I have heard more than one report, however, that t. bridgesii specifically may contain some sort of MAOI. I don't know what the reasoning behind this was or if there was any evidence behind it, though. I can only offer my own experiences, which were that bridgesii was a qualitatively much different trip than other cacti, darker, stronger, and better. As to whether or not this any bearing on MAOI activity, I have no idea.

I've seen Hordenine referred to as an MAOI, but there seems to be some confusion over this. I think it's actually that it is a competitive substrate for MAO b. Which means it occupies it temporarily, giving other molecules the chance to stick around a bit longer.

I think that if mescaline cacti were dangerous to take with other things we would already know about it, given it's several millenia of use ;) I believe the cacti is often used with cocoa in native ceremonies.

Cool, thanks for the replies guys. That link was completely lost on me though :p Would be nice to delve deeper into learning about this stuff more but maybe when i have more time on my hands.

Another question which is related... I also read something about the MAOI effect of aMT maybe not playing nice with tyrosine/tyramine in cactus. Again, this is all based on comments i've read but it would be nice to have some clarification.
