Not on a train, sadly.
I used to be very happy about the fact that I had pleasant breath. However, since a couple of months (perhaps, since I became sexually active), I've noticed a persistent foul odour (more of a taste than an odour) in my breath. What is disturbing about it is that it smells a bit reminiscent of shit :/

Is it possible to have caught certain odour-causing bacteria from someone? Is there a permanent solution such as antibiotics?

Don't take antibiotics for something like bad breath. They're over-prescribed as is, and unless your health is at risk you'll just be contributing to the problem of antibiotic resistant strains.

I find daily mouthwash to do wonders, especially just before bed. Combine that with daily tongue cleaning and you should be fine. However, if it is particularly bad and/or persistent then antibiotics might be the only solution.

^ yeah I struggled with bad breath issues (I think it stemmed from starting a bunch of nootropics, DMAE in particular), but mouthwashing very thoroughly before bed and of course brushing after every meal helped A LOT. In fact I am no longer self-conscious about it since it is gone (although I still carry mints with me usually).

What also might help you is to do a fast of some sort...I don't know what your body can handle/react with, but maybe a 3 day juice fast would help? Just guessing here really...

Just keep on regularly brushing your teeth, flossing (uber important) and using a tongue cleaner. Tongue cleaning is absolutely effective (in my experience) in getting rid of most bad breath that regular brushing cant.

Perhaps check to see if you have any tonsilloliths that could be easily removed, as these can smell strongly of hydrogen sulfide...

When i remove them, i gently apply pressure to the base of the tonsil with the end of a chop-stick, and they pop out quite readily...

Considerations

Some medical disorders will produce specific, characteristic odors to the breath.

* A fruity odor to the breath occurs as the body attempts to get rid of excess acetone through the breathing. This is a characteristic sign of ketoacidosis (such as diabetic ketoacidosis), a potentially life-threatening condition.

* A fecal odor to the breath (the breath smells like feces) can occur with prolonged vomiting, especially when there is a bowel obstruction. It can also occur temporarily if the person has a nasogastric tube in place (a tube placed through the nose or mouth to the stomach to drain the stomach contents).

* The breath may have an ammonia-like odor (also described as urine-like or "fishy") in people with chronic kidney failure.

Common Causes

If previously normal breath turns into halitosis, causes could include:

* tonsils
* Food or beverages consumed (such as cabbage, garlic, raw onions,
alcoholic drinks, or coffee)
* Vitamin supplements (especially in large doses)
* Poor dental hygiene
* Dentures
* Cavities
* Tobacco smoking
* Alcoholism
* Throat infection
* Sinusitis
* Lung infection
* Gum disease (gingivitis, gingivostomatitis)
* Abscessed tooth
* Impacted tooth
* Foreign body in the nose (in children)
o Often (but not always) there is a white, yellowish, or bloody discharge
from one nostril
* Drugs
* Paraldehyde
* Triamterene and inhaled anesthetics
* Insulin - injection

Diseases that may be associated with breath odor (not presented in order of likelihood—some are extremely unlikely):

* Acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis
* Acute necrotizing ulcerative mucositis
* Acute renal failure
* Bowel obstruction (can cause breath to smell like feces)
* Bronchiectasis
* Chronic renal failure (can cause breath to smell like ammonia)
* Diabetes (fruity or "sweet chemical" smell with ketoacidosis)
* Esophageal cancer
* Gastric carcinoma
* Gastrojejunocolic fistula (fruity-smelling breath)
* Hepatic encephalopathy
* Diabetic ketoacidosis
* Lung abscess
* Ozena, or atrophic rhinitis
* Periodontal disease
* Pharyngitis
* Zenker's diverticulum

Mouthwash and chewing gum (Y)

If you smoke like a chimney get a tongue scraper aswell lol

Tongue cleaning as mentioned and gargling w/ peroxide (take 3% peroxide and dilute with twice as much water, so its 1/3 3% peroxide).If you don't have a tongue scraper you can use floss for the scraping. I dilute the peroxide with mouthwash(generic Listerine-type), but I don't know this to be safe.

Dental check-ups every six months, at very minimum once a year. Some people utilize Vitamin C much better for healthy gums if they take something with bioflavonoids regularly.

I didn't read all the replies so sorry if this has been said before. But a lot of times breath that smells or taste like shit can indicate a decaying tooth or an abscess in the mouth/tooth. 'Taste'-- meaning it taste like shit to yourself, usually in the back of the mouth.

One time i had a lot of pain under one of my caps... way back in my mouth. So i went to the dentist and omg when he pulled that cap off the smell that hit my nose was startling and so offensive. It smelled like shit and rot. I couldn't believe it. Thank god the smell was covered and no one else could smell it. But when the dentist pulled the cap off that's when the monster was released.
I had a decaying tooth. The part of the tooth they leave to attach the cap onto.

And one time i hit my front tooth with a bottle of soda. And two days later i had this horrible pain and than a few days later a big bubble appeared above my tooth and when it popped the smell was awful, it had abscessed. OH and that's when i was first prescribed Vicodin. I often think of that experience as the beginning of my addiction. Wow, that was 15 years ago or so.

There are many other reasons for this smell. There could be something wrong with/or in your stomach or your liver.

Go to the Dentist and if he can't find anything, go to the Doctor.

If someone says your breath smells like urine, that is usually an indication of a renal or kidney problem. Just FYI. I know you said 'Shit' but I thought I'd add the urine info in case anyone has that and was worried about it.

Thanks for the replies, but no one has yet answered my main question: is bad breath transferable?

Re: Tonsiloliths: I doubt it, because I don't have tonsils.

Re: 'fags' and coffee: I don't drink coffee and the only fags I ever smoked would eventually cum in my mouth ;)

I do use listerene every night before bed, right after I brush my teath, btw.

i would guess that bacterial infections could be transfered from one mouth to another..why not? What else happened in your life when you became sexually active? I'm wondering about a confounding variable in the observed corellation.

I gotta chime in with what roxi said. The only time I have had that shit taste in my mouth was when I had a decaying tooth. Normally between the teeth or something is where I would find the spot. I never had any pain from those teeth anyway.

No one has really mentioned eating regularly. Do you happen to find yourself not eating for several hours straight or just eating candy or a small amount of carbs? Because I have noticed in the past that my breath gets pretty bad if I don't eat for a prolonged period of time

Jamshyd, definitely start gargling with hydrogen peroxide regularly, like after every meal and before bed and when you first wake up. If it's any problem you can handle without a dentist, that is going to be the best solution.
