I've talked to some people in drug addiction/recovery in a psych ward and they say one of the things that bothers them about sobriety is that they don't necessarily have any interest in friendships/romantic relationships/house/kids. Just want a stable job, an okay home, and use drugs because they don't really fit into society.

I wonder if anyone has managed to become fully sober/partially sober with moderate drug use while still not being "mainstream" no wife, kids, friendships, hobbies etc..

Those “mainstream” things are the things most people consider worth getting off drugs for, wife/kids/friends/hobbies etc.. Having none of that and being sober sounds quite boring to be quite honest. Still though any life style beats an active addicts life style.

Depends on your definition of successful and mainstream I guess.
Had all that for 10 years, abandoned it all to do what I really wanted.
Have a job which I enjoy instead of a career I don't, wage cut non withstanding.
Now live with a friend so no house no responsibilities, tiny outgoings.
So on the face of it I fucked up.
In reality never better.
I just stopped living by other people's standards.
