Oh fuck, its that time again... you can't switch on the TV without seeing one thing or another about the Olympics (which leads me to wonder why I even bother watch TV but anyways...), it boggles my mind how such a ridiculously capitalistic (just read all the stories about the Beijing residents losing their homes), boring, and unoriginal event is being so celebrated. While I can understand why countries would want to host the Olympics, I definitely cannot understand the average joe's or jane's fascination with them - the whole dream about "achieving" medals...etc, all you really did was contribute to the direct ruin of countless lives for your stupid medal...

geez guys how about some positivity and rejoicing at the human spirit and some of the people who are pushing the very limit of what the human species can achieve (and that includes the mental side, so many other attributes other than being a physical specimen are required to be the best in the world at something)

guys this dates back to ancient greece and I see it as an amazing stage for people from almost every country on the planet to compete. Its a reminder that no matter where we come from we are all human and it is amazing to see what is possible by the human body and mind. Legends are made, feets of supreme endurance and strength are witnessed and some alas will not make their dreams atleast this time. Maybe us Australians get more fired up about the Olympics than others because we own in terms of sporting ability relative to population but, I dont think so overall, all medalists get fame glory and not necessarily fortune from some training that must have been almost unbareable at times.

You may argue there are people starving, climate change occurring all this time as we clap on a runner or a swimmer but these are some of the things I for one want to be around for my descendants and to be an opportunity for those who are currently less fortunate.

I do however have some reservations about the host nations human rights record particularly in Tibet and the Tianamen square massacre, who knows yet if it will be a good magnifying glass on the chinese authorities and raise awareness of this globally, or if they will choke some of the spirit out of the Olympics.

I don't really like sports in general all that much, so I am very bored of it. I also think it's sad that people are just ignoring this Tibet issue.

The steps that China is taking to impress the world or the Olympic crowd is pretty interesting. Such as banning blacks from getting drunk and restrictions on driving in the city. . . la la la

Nobody watches the olympics

and by nobody i really mean nobody
i'm not sure how serious you are but that's really untrue.

i found some figured for the 2006 winter olympics (the source is the olympic television research center whose figures are independently verified where possible).

term: viewer hours = the total number of hours watched by all viewers
(program duration * program audience) in terms of defining the
popularity of the event. viewer hours allows for comparison between
events with different program duration.

the 2006 winter olympics viewer hours = 10.6 billion of which the u.s. accounted for around 20%.

alasdair

Not bored at all - I can't wait for the Olympics!

Plus we just got an HDTV and it will be very nice to watch them on a big screen. :D

i like the idea of it. infact I do watch select events, but the repetitive comercials, on and on and on.tv off, for the rest of the month

I wonder who watches the paralympics? i didnt even know they aired it till i saw a, yeah, commercial for it

I like the olympics. This may be because of memories of trippin on mushrooms years back and watching the male gymnastic competition (WOAHHH! HOW DO THEY DOOO THAT!???? lol) but it has always been sort of fascinating to me. I wont actually sit down and watch it, but I catch bits and peices of it here and there.

When I was younger I watched the Olympics pretty religiously with my mom. We're (especially me) not particularly athletic but still enjoyed it. Since I haven't lived with my mom it's been years since I've watched any Olympic event. I didn't even really realize the Olympics were going on right now until I saw this thread. :\

Nope. Not bored at all.

I don't have my usual level of anticipation though... Usually I'm really excited and right in there! But at the moment... I'm kinda meh... but that's probably because I'm getting my mega sports action fix from Le Tour at the moment.

When the medals start being handed out I'm sure I'll be right back in there :)

CB :)

Nobody watches the olympics

and by nobody i really mean nobody

i guess i'm a "nobody" then. :\

i watch as much of it as i can....either live, DVR or replay, i don't care. i mean, how often do you get to watch all of these events with only the top athletes in the world competing? oh yeah, every 4 years (or 2 when you figure the winter games). it's only 2 weeks out of every 2-4 years, sheesh.

as for the OP's question....
i'm not bored of the olympics but i am a bit put out since abby wambach of the US women's soccer team has broken her leg in a match against brazil last week. :(
