Hey guys,
I just wanted to know if anyone has experiences with Irritable bowel syndrome( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irritable_bowel_syndrome ), as I'm suffering from it since i can remember. In addition I suffer from social anxiety, mild depression and the fear of failure. So I wondered if anyone here has some experiences with those problems, so we can compare notes and talk about medication etc. . I hope I can find someone to share my experiences with :). Have a great evening <3

PS: Sorry for my bad english, it's not my native language :)

Hi kleinerkiffer,

Welcome to Bluelight and don't worry about your English, the message is loud and clear :) I also suffered from Irritable Bowel Syndrome years back and this is due to excessive alcohol use. I wasn't really given any type of medication, although sometimes when it's really bad I relied on Zantac. I changed my diet around because my diet didn't include fiber at all lols. I also started exercising going to the gym and of course cutting back on alcohol has helped as well. I don't think I suffer from IBS anymore but from time to time I still get some type of irritation.

Hey maya,
thanks for your reply :) how much alcohol did you drink, and did you drink during the week or just at weekends, as I'm drinking excessively friday and saturday evening. What where your symptoms ? At the moment I try to self medicate with benzos and healing earth because I think my IBS is related to my socialy anxiety / panic disorder.

I was pretty much drinking everyday and that includes the weekends. I would drink about 5-7 beers a day and then drink tequilla on Saturday and Sundays. My stomach was really messed up and I usually have this diarrhea that either imodium or zantac helps. I didn't really do any type of medication because I didn't think it was related to my anxiety but drinking everyday did not help that's for sure. I think that you should limit your alcohol consumption as well because alcohol irritates the lining of the bowel.

Do you use any drugs or only drink alcohol? I've had IBS for some years and even while using opiates, I never got constipated. Like Maya, when I took medication for acid-reflux it got worse. Alcohol will definitely make it worse, so try to cut back if you can. Coffee, anything with tomatoes, salads and spicy foods wreak havoc for me.

I've had colonoscopy and endoscopy twice to rule out Crohn's disease and IBS was the only thing the G.I. doctor could come up with. He gave me lomotil and that worked well, but now when I get it bad I use over the counter loperamide. Have you been to a doctor for your symptoms?

Well, I know that I should reduce my alcohol consumption, as my IBS get's worse the day after drinking, but I think it's more related to my anxiety, because when it started I didn't drink at all. Also I try to eat helthy and work out, but every day is still a big struggle and it's not easy to to even leave the house for me. Every day is a fight to get trough school until I get back home :/

Hey T. Calderone,
at the moment I use every drug i can get my hands on at weekends, but as I said I think my IBS is anxiety-related. I have never seen a doctor, because I'm to embarrassed -.-

I agree with t calderone, I think that you should see a doctor just to eliminate other possible causes. Please also discuss with your doctor the possible medication for anxiety that you can use.I do have anxiety as well but it is not causing ibs so I don't take any medication for it. Everyone is different so you can't really compare what works for everyone else but you can do a trial and error to see what will work out for you.

I know that i should see a doctor, but I refuse, because I want to manage it on my own and in addition it's really embarassing for me to admit to someone that I have IBS that results in diarrhea and social anxiety. Both of you wrote that you had IBS, so in conclusion you don't have it anymore, if I understand it right. So did it simply vanish, or what ? Another question, do you know any supplements that help protect my stomache and my liver when drinking or in general ?
Best regards :)

It's not going to vanish ever, it will simply react to how you treat your body and mind. If you manage it well with a healthy diet, and take probiotics and supplements that helps your immune/digestive system then you will be much better off, and it will go away for a long time. If you drink and eat like shit, and neglect your health in general, it will come back or get much worse. I have something a little worse than IBS, Chrons Disease, and I got 2 colonscopies in my young life already, and I had a finger in my ass more times than I care to remember. It's not any more embarrassing than any other medical procedure.

Also, your embarrassment is simply your anxiety keeping you anxious. The longer you buy into thoughts like "I refuse help because I'm embarrassed that I need help" then you're only going to feed your anxiety and harm your body. Don't believe your own thoughts unless you can verify them. Not seeing a doctor about this is just dumb, imo. I'm not saying they'll be able to cure you of it, but there's literally no good reason not to go.

Probiotics are very good for someone like you, these replenish the bacteria in your gut that help break down food and absorb the nutrients.

As far as drugs go, there's prednisone, omeprazole, and marijuana helps a lot. Also, IBS is different from what I have because I have an actual disease as opposed to the much more mysterious "syndrome." It means the actual reasons for IBS are generally more curious than simply being born with a god damn fucked up body. This being the case, there are some doctors who have been known to prescribe anti-anxiety or SSRIs for IBS, whereas that would never be given for Chron's.

As per the post above yes it can go away for a long time depending on how you take care of your body. My diet is very healthy at the moment rich in fruits and vegetables and I rarely drink alcohol. Why would you be embarrass to tell a doctor your IBS? It's your health that's on the line and you should do whatever it takes to take care of your body. If you really insist on drinking which I think you shouldn't perhaps you can look at this thread in Healthy Living:

IBS never really went away for me so I self-treat because I have no health coverage. So if you have access to a doctor, make an appointment. I know you feel embarrassed but you should get it checked out to be on the safe side.
