Internet in hospital

I was just wondering if anyone has had a recent stint in hospital and knows whether you're likely to be able to access the internet as an in-patient from bed these days (it's only recently I've noticed the 'no mobiles' signs have disappeared from being all over the shop)?

Just wondering as there was talk of my being possibly kept in the other day and I'll need to make sure that I've got enough to keep me occupied one way or another if necessary.

I don't think anyone will object to you accessing t'interwebz on yer phone these days. Also, I think most beds have these pay to view TVs now which I'm pretty sure include an internet option (at a fuckin cost, of course).

I was using my phone whilst in A&E a few months ago... they don't seem to care anymore.

I haven't been an in-patient for like 14 years or something now... fair to say the internet wasn't really an option in your bed then! :D

Yeah - those pay tvs are a right scam, last time I was in I went to the shop and bought a fivers worth of credit - at that very moment they chose to discharge me. I was vexed :D

I'd be taking my laptop in if I can, don't have a smartphone atm.

I saw the thread title and was concerned that the 'net was in intensive care or summat. I'm easily amused :D

Mobiles are fair game in hospitals these days (most of the hospital staff use theirs in their work anyway), speaking from the experience of the 70 odd days I've spent in hospital over the last 18 months (apart from when I was in ICU). The alternative in my local hospital is to use their crappy touchscreen TVs on most beds, these cost about £10 a day and give you some of the free view channels, a shit selection of streamed films, free land line calls and massively restricted Internet (no iplayer or streaming sites) accessed with a ridiculously poor resistive touch screen. I got a giff gaff sim and pay £12 for the unlimited data bolt on, they did catch me out tethering my phone to my tablet though, not sure how.

It'll depend on the particular hospital whether you'll have internet access or not. Phone them and ask.

You can definitely use a phone no bother. Hospitals seem to have realised that they won't cause anything to break, unlike stupid airlines who still persist with making you pretend to turn the thing off.

Most hospitals Ive experienced are pretty cool with you using mobile internet or a phone. As long as you aren't acting like Dom Jolly.

I use mine even when sitting in direct view of the little square warning sign saying switch your mobiles off.

As long as you keep your ring/key/message volumes off, you should be fine.

Coverage can be up and down tho, what with all the equipment and shit ( fucking inconvenience that, they should turn all that shit off, those bastards ;p )

I've had a latop/notebook/smartphone during stays/visits and always just managed to at least check email and do a bit o' browsing.

If youre waiting for an app in one of the hospital clinics tho, be prepared to have some Old Git point to the No Mobiles sign and go 'Ay' and eyeball you like you're a piece of shit. Either respond by telling them youre watching some double penetration porn you downloaded earlier and the phone is in flight mode, or tell em to mind their own fucking business. I usually use the charm method, but it can get a bit annoying when they end up never shutting the fuck up.

Never once had a member of staff tell me to put my phone away. ever.

Normally the signs say switch em off and dont clarify that. But i read em like you ... No Don Jolly shiznitz etc,

Thanks for the info guys, that's reassuring. Only remaining concern is the prospect of having to buy and wear pa-fucking-jamas 8(

When I was pregnant and in hospital with high blood pressure (thanks to my ex) I was able to use the internet on my mobile phone. They had no issue with it at all. I remember asking my family to bring my charger in, constantly texting people and using Facebook and there was no problems at all. So I doubt there will be now.

Oh hang on, unless you start SWEARING really LOUD at your sort of mother-in-law, then that's not acceptable LoL!
