In my quest to become a refined connoisseur of the opioid world, I recently acquired and tried some tramadol... and noticed a couple odd things which I thought worth sharing. Has anyone else had these effects?
  • First, it takes a ton to do much. 400mg seems to be my threshold of effects, and 600mg is quite fun -- havne't tried anything higher. (I have heard 200mg as a good recreational dose) For reference, I would typically take 30mg oxycodone or 300mg codeine.
  • Second, either crushing the pills to a very fine powder doesn't defeat the time release, or else it is just very long-acting. At 8 hours after taking them, I'm as high as I ever was from them.
  • The high is comparable to 300mg codeine but noticeably different: a litter spacier, like I find hydrocodone. It seems to go very well with benzos and/or marijuana -- even though I am not a huge fan of either drugs and typically prefer to do my opioids alone.
  • On 600mg I notice NO adverse side effects. No itching, no nausea, nothing. Just some very mild (pleasant) scalp-tingling
I am thinking perhaps this relates to the fact that I'm on an SSRI (citalopram) now. Also I get the feeling this could be wonderful at a dose of 1 gram or so.

Isn't it dangerous to take 1 gram of the stuff?? I have tried it and find it PRETTY MUCH like codeine, I can't say it was special... but thats awesome if you can get a good high from it. Im wondering if you up the dosage more if you'll get shitty side-effects like with codeine?
One more question, does codeine effect you the same when taking the SSRI, cause SSRIs interfere with the enzyme that metabolizes codeine.

zorn check my thread out below.
Tramal + antideppresants = with the clouds
No itching??? gotta be shitting me. I nearly tear my skin off......
does take a lot to work though, usually about 400 - 500mg taken spaced out (seems to work better that way). Tramal has a strong SSRI like effect as well as small opiate effect combined.

A gram might be dangerous for someone else but judging by the no side effects at 600mg, prob not. Too bad I'm out.
Codeine is the same for me as before the SSRI -- perhaps slightly stronger. Many SSRIs do inhibit CYP2D6, which is important for codeine, but not the one I'm on (citalopram/Celexa).

It isn't time release. Anyway, 400-600mg is a good high, and 800mg gets me nice and lit. The only thing with tramadol for me is I cannot piss or shit for the life of me, and I have no problem with this on other opiates. When you go to sleep high on Ultram, it is the most wonderful possible sleep to. Most people think Ultram is trash, but I find it to be very useful :)

Tramadol is in a similar vien to Ibuprofen so it isnt as dangerous to abuse as codine.
I've found it quite nice myself but I've only ever done about 200mg at a go.
I also find that my doc is always more likely to prescribe that than codine because it doesnt have the same abuse potentail.

alert - The stuff I have is clearly labelled time-release, Contramal SR100. I crushed the pills thoroughly (it was difficult), but I'm not convinced I defeated the time-release 'cause it lasted so damn long, and didn't have a sharp peak to the high.
bong - No, tramadol is believed to be a work like combination of an opioid (eg codeine) and an SSRI. From rxlist:
Tramadol is a centrally acting synthetic analgesic compound. Although its mode of action is not completely understood, from animal tests, at least two complementary mechanisms appear applicable: binding of parent and M1 metabolite to mu-opioid receptors and weak inhibition of reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin. Opioid activity is due to both low affinity binding of the parent compound and higher affinity binding of the O-demethylated metabolite M1 to mu-opioid receptors.

i have expericence with ultram in the ultracet form.
like zorn noticed, it also takes a ton to fuck me up of this.
i love opiods but i hate this drug. i hope ill never do it again.
i started off lightly, i believe around 300mg... after just once my tolerane zoomed up. by the thrid time i had to take around 900mg and then i proceded to puke it all up the next morning after just an hour or two of sleep.
not what i call a fun high either... imo. the nasty side effects did seem to increase with the dosage mgs. i really dont think it would be much fun up around one gram at least it wasnt for me.
the high was less buzzy than hydrocodone and i simply just didnt enjoy it as much.
if it makes any difference i am also on a ssri, i have a high natural and accuiried tolerance to opiods and this is the only opiod/opiate besides dope i have ever vomited on.

Please note...With Ultracet, you could possibly run into APAP toxicity problems with recreational doses.

You people are going to end up dead from a brain injury from having so many fucking seizures over and over that. . . Don't any of you read up on drugs before taking way to much of them? In doses over 400mg tramadol has been shown to induce some pretty bad seizures, plus the chance of this is
increased when taken with SSRI's or other AD's.
Yes there are 200mg contramal but you should never take more than 2 per 24hour period.
"Tramadol is in a similar vien to Ibuprofen"
Tramadol is nothing like Ibuprofen.
"so it isnt as dangerous to abuse as codine"
No, it's more dangerous to abuse than codeine, codiene can't induce seizures, plus narcotic induced respiratory depression is not totally reversed with narcan in tramadol OD cases.
"I also find that my doc is always more likely to prescribe that than codine because it doesnt have the same abuse potentail."
I find the opposite to be true, doctors prescribe Tramadol with ignorance and impunity because they are unaware of it's abuse potential and danger to patients who take fucking 12 of them out of ignorance. It will soon be a schedule III or IV in the U.S.,just watch.

???
There is a small (~1%) risk of seizures with Tramadol, mainly when taken in conjunction with antidepressants or by those with a lowered seizure threshold
as posted by zorn in ultram post in health Q&A
where did you gte your source from Wombat?
can you post it?
i looked up ultram on rxlist.com before i used
and Grand Master i checked the APAP intake and i was pretty far below the toxicity level
i always make sure of that

wanderlust -- looks like you were safe, but close. That much tram in Ultracet form is around 9g of APAP... you don't want to be doing that on a regular basis (stomache problems) but unless you're a small person, it's under the toxic threshold. I wouldn't go much higher though...
Wombat -- first, the respiratory depression thing is not an issue. We're talking about Ultram here, not smack: you don't overdose unless you're trying to kill yourself with the stuff. Even if you somehow did down fifty-hundred pills, the EMTs can ventilate you just fine.
Yes, there is small risk of seizure, but it's very small in those who don't normally have them, or have a lowered seizure threshold, even in those taking high amounts. Given that nearly everyone on this board engages in relatively high-risk drug use, it's kind of silly to get so worked about about a tiny risk of seizures -- which in itself is likely much less damaging than a taking a single pill of MDMA.
Of course, if you do have a seizure from Ultram, you should obviously discontinue it!

oh yeah this was a one time high dose deal.
the total times i used it was three and i never want to touch it, even from the first time i didnt like the high much.
but i could have sworn the APAP was a few below 9g... i dont think i would have gone that close.
im not a realitvly large person, so i consider myself to be on the low end of the scale for toxic values.
the mgs were taken over a course of about two hours and i remember every time redoseing recounting to grams of APAP as to not go over.
maybe i mussed up some where, how bad!
anyway if anyone has any more questions about the sizures and effects... www.ultracet.com has the proffessional packing info.

I don't have any URLs handy, but I know many people who have had seizures from taking Ultram.
Most who exceeded 400mg, some who only took
one dose.It has never given me a seizure, but
it gives me muscle jerks, spasms, whatever you want to call them. It's like I get shocked with 110 volts all of a sudden and I jump.Weirdest damn thing, like a mini seizure.
Ultram is a weird drug. And don't let anyone say you cannot get addicted to it, I have the WORST withdrawal from lack of it.I have been taking up to 6 per day for over a year. It's the worst physical/psychological addiction I have ever had to face.I can replace it with narcotics of course, but when they run out, I had better have some Tramadol handy or i'm in trouble.

I guess if you can handle a gram and not have a seizure, you could try lowering your dose by about half , and taking some Cimetidine 4-500mg an hour before dosing, and an hour after. This will increase plasma concentrations, and delay the clearance of the drug, also increasing the chances of you having a seizure as well but. . .
This also works well with some benzodiazepines; diazepam, chlordiazepoxide, but not lorazepam or any of the 1,4 benzos ( alprazolam, midazolam etc.)

Yes, it's addictive, probably along a similar vein as codeine or hydrocodone.
The problem with cimetidine is that CYP2D6 inhibits metabolism to the primary (M1) metabolite, which has most of the opioid properties, whereas tramadol itself has most of the S/NRI properties. So I would theorize cimetidine would decrease euphoria and increase seizure risk.
wanderlust it's actually 7.8g.

I'm not a big opiate user, so my tolerance for them is fairly low, but what I like to do is take 200mg Tramadol, and bump it once every hour with 100mg. I'll only bump it once or twice max. Nice lil' buzz, nothing major. I'm sure for some people here the mgs will have to be bumped up quite a bit...

600mg made me seizure, not full on but i would be un-able to control my leg or arm for a few seconds and i would get a reel feeling of detachment from realality. i have a very high opiate tolerance so i have no idea why it happend, i guess i hit the 1%. but because of that i won't botger with them. pluss the high was not worth it.

Ahhhh...Tramadol Hcl.
I started with that for pain. REALLY NICE at first; first week was really nice. Then the next week I was waking up with headaches. Few days after that I would sweat and get headaches if I didn't take after 4 hours.
I went through 4 days withdrawl - it was terrible: sweats, insomnia, HEADACES, stiff body, etc.
DON'T TAKE IT. Narcotics are more fun. :)
