There are a number of recruitment agencies that deal with recruiting O/S IT staff and will assist you with VISA's etc. Do a search using an australian filter for them.

Having just moved from the sunny shores of the Gold Coast, leaving my family and uprooting to Sydney, on a smaller scale I've done what you're just about to do.
I've lived in the UK and nearly everywhere in Australia (except melbourne - will get there someday) and after doing a lot of travelling and 'seeing the world' I have to say that there's no place like 'the lucky country'.
I love it here, there's so much opportunity and it's a country that's constantly evolving.
As everyone else has said, IT is starving for experienced people, there should not be many problems getting a good job, although it may be easier in Sydney rather than Melbourne.
If you decide to come to Sydney, I can put you in touch with a wonderful IT recruitment consultant, she got me my job and even got the company to pay what I was asking for, which was a bit more than they were originally willing to offer.
The service from her was brilliant, she kept me right up to date, contacting me every couple of days until the contract was signed, and even now - four months later, she still calls occasionally to make sure I'm happy with the position.
No matter where you go in Australia, every city and town has so much to offer. Although only a young country, Australia has more cutural richness than some European countries I've visited. And it's so diverse, beaches, desert, mountains, rainforests, big red rocks in the middle of nowhere
The animals are cute and so are the people
I'm sure if you do decide to come here, you'll love it.

And I agree with what everyone else had said about travelling there first and seeing what it's like. It's easier to apply for permanent residency for a country while you're actually there working, rather than beforehand.
I don't have time for a long reply (at work right now) but here are some links for info on obtaining Australia visas and working permits.

i have to agree with mona/miss apples and the other one about coming over here on a working visa first.
miss apples is rite about its going to be hard for you to get any type of visa. since america isn't/and never was part of the commonwealth is makes things more difficult for americans to get visas/residency here in oz. i know that as an american trying to come over here for 3mths..on a visitors visa you have to jump thru many hoops and provide a lot on info and it may take a few mths just to get it sorted out. this is supposed to change in the near future (think the end of this year). this isn't the case if your a resident of any commonwealth country where u are eligable to get an electronic travel authority which takes seconds to approve.
as for working visa's..yes americans only have the right to apply for 4mths..as aussies (and all nationalities now) can only get one in the USA for 4mths. and you can only hold one working visa for a particular country ONCE in your life. once you've had it..its gone.
there are a few things you can do to stay long (as i have done..im a candain who came to oz for a 3 week holiday..then decided to come back on a 1 year working visa 3 mths later..which has now expired) there's the little trick of hoping back and forth to new zealand every 3mths when ur 3mth visitors visa expires..however this is both expensive and time consuming..and the gov knwos that many ppl do this and are trying to crack down on it (pleaseee dun let them stop ME at the boarder in the next couple weeks when im off to do it again =( )
as for getting residency in oz HAHAHAHA thats a funny one..its DAM more difficult to get residency here then in AMERICA!!! which is thought to the be the hardest place in the world!! ive looked into from day one. requirements include AT LEAST:
1) a uni degree + 2 years relevant in field experience
2) be under 40(preferably under 30 married with kids (u all know how the gov here pushes families)
3)skills that are unusual and beneficial to oz
it all works on the points system just like everything else of course. but u MUST meet those 3 things regardless.
UNLESS u can get sponsored which is a big hassle as well. so much red tape.
the only easy way tog et into this country is no be non englis speaking with no skills and they'll let you in LOL!
ohh the only other option is to get married, but even just last week a canadian girl was thrown out of oz even though she is legitimatly married to an aussie and this is becoming more the go these days..which is backwards in my opinion. (im looking at this option now cause as of oct 17th i will have to go back to canada =( any takers???? hehe
but be warned there's lots of red tape that way too..friends and family have to write essays and do the ppl get married there are interviews ect so deam that its a real married. u get tested on how much u know one another ect.

If you want to try and come down here for a while and work, it might be easiest to find an american IT company that has an office here. Typically that will be your larger companies, but there are some smaller ones too. If you approach them and indicate that you want to work here, then it can help a lot with regards to visa's, etc.

I can't add much that hasn't already been said, so I'll repeat the points everyone made that I agree with...
Definitely go for the "try before you buy" idea (ie: temp visa), just in case you don't really want to settle here. That said though, I think you'll love the lifestyle here! I've grown up in Melbourne and have never lived anywhere else, and the thought of leaving has never even entered my head! In fact I'd go so far as to say that I will not leave Melbourne (excepitional circumstances aside) because I love it too much here!
Look forward to hopefully meeting you should you decide to take the plunge, and I'll make sure I've got a hat with dangling corks waiting for you at the airport...

Whoa!! Wow!! I can't believe how many responses I recieved. Thank you everybody for your insightful and generous information.
Basically at this point I'm just looking to move, even some place, anywhere, even temporarly. My job is a bit unstable, meaning it could potentially come down to being laid off. If Los Angeles weren't so bloody expensive it wouldn't really be a concern. But I don't want to be left with no job, no place to go, and paying alot while my whole intention is to move.
I've been here for almost a year and there's been some interesting and fun times, invaluable lessons. I'd really like to persue moving to a place I'd most like to be(Such as East coast U.S, or Australia). Choosing these locations because they seem more promising than where I am now.
(Yeah, yeah I know "grass is always greener"...heh...)
A working VISA while logically is pure genious. Financially it would be a major strain. Because plane tix. cost so much from America to Aus(Almost more than anywhere else I've seen) it would be quite difficult to buy multiple plane tickets.
I'm foreseeing some definite research in my future into how getting a VISA to stay in Australia works. Thank you everybody for the links you provided that get more to the point of what I'll be needing to study.
Of coarse I'd always consider marrying a australian woman to be able to live there. heehee

I'm mostly a support guy. I work for one of the major VoIP companies in america and while I'm learning more about how the network functions. My primary job as of yet is answering support questions(Via phone) to our customers and clients, doing a bit of inspecting into "unresolvable problems", and monitoring our network(Sitescope). VoIP is a newly commercialized technology so possibly there is a job market for somebody with any experiance in either Melbourne or Sydney.
Though I'm doing that sort of work(IT) right now, I'd be interested in completly switching fields. So where I would live wouldn't be so dependant on the type of job I need but rather on where I could find a comfortable place for rent.
But on the other hand, it does look like I'll need to find a job first to uphold any VISA I may be able to get. So it may come down to finding a job first(Which could really turn out to be a good thing).
Though I use to live a few blocks from the beaches. I do miss it. And all this conversing and talking about Australia and looking at maps has got me so fired up to go to the beach now!

ur gonna love australia but it is different from the rest of the world. it mightnt b what u expect... with my biases opinion of course head west... althoguh it isfurther away from the rest of the country if u looking for a kinda relaxed lifestyle it has a lot to offer plus an ok lifestyle. my friend just came back from sydney and she found it to b very busy and she didnt like it but hey what u like and what she likes r gonna b different so i agree wiht the others come out here work ur way round australia and c what u like coz u may find out its not really what u imagined
