Inside Sydney's meth hell as city becomes one of the biggest hotspots on the planet for the evil drug - with housewives and young professionals caught up in its scourge

Excerpt:
Hardcore drug 'ice' has shaken off its 'bogan coke' tag to become a party-night high for the young, rich and respectable as Australia is named a crystal meth capital of the world.

A blockbuster new report found Australia has the highest meth use out of 25 countries in Europe, Asia and Oceania, with Sydney and Perth the biggest hotspots.

Experts have warned the scourge of once-taboo methamphetamine is now gripping all levels of society - and is just a text, a social media message or a phone call away.

let me guess what we should do to solve it.

increase penalties on petty crime, increase penalties for drug offenders, strip social security, block harm reduction initiatives.

how far off am i?

Nah, we should regulate all drugs worldwide so the supply chain is safer. People are always going to do drugs for many reasons. But my opinion is not popular…..

ok yeah its the logical answer.

i guess the tone of the article felt a bit tone deaf since i have been affected with drug addiction myself. and i don't blame the drug, or end up hating myself as a result of it.

i read a bit more of the article and its pretty blatant fearmongering, reading that shit is not healthy.

but i would agree ice is a huge issue in australia, although it doesn't really affect me or my SO in our day to day lives, to a meaningful extent, where we live, in the outer suberbs of melbourne.

do you think heroin is anywhere near the player ice is in australia?

someone was trying to tell me is more hidden but i'm thinking ice is just more affordable for people and the trend of the moment or something.

how exactly is your day to day affected by ice users? are you worried for your safety in your area, of getting jumped for looking at someone the wrong way or something?

probably half of parliament would start going into alcohol WD if they applied scientific understanding to policy and were consistent with their current stance towards recreational drugs which hold no medical value, and in fact tax the health system.

There was a thing on 7:30 Report recently about a guy who died after drinking 11 bottles of vodka in 10 days, all bought from the same place. It also talked about the alcohol industry cashing in bigtime during the lockdowns. At the end someone compared Australia's drinking culture with America's gun culture.

Then today I saw a thing on the news about gambling and someone said that was like America's gun culture.

I hate to be a conspiracy theorist but I reckon they play things like ice up to keep the focus off alcohol (and gambling).

its an easy scapegoat and murdoch is pretty fucking blatant with what his tactics are.

although i don't grant people in power a high degree of intelligence just off the bat.

pretty emotional place i think.

This forum is littered with articles about meth exploding in popularity in Australia. In the past I've shown this to be false, but I suppose it could be true this time. Maybe I'll look into it at some point, or somebody else can!

Report 16 of the National Wastewater Drug Monitoring Program

This report from the Australian govt doesn’t have data from after the pandemic began but survey data indicates a decrease in meth use from 2001-19. The decrease was particularly seen in younger populations, with older ones seeing some slight increases
