I always thought heat was necessary to dissolve tar.
It seems odd to me that your tar would completely, easily, and readily dissolve without heat. But it's your money.
As for sterilization issues, not really. Just use a filter - even something like a cigarette filter or cotton do filter out quite a bit, as you can se by the particulate clumped up at the end when your done using it.
