I was pondering the workings of certain dry powder inhalers today and wondered if other drugs could be taken by forcefully inhaling finely ground powders thereof. Would this work, or are the effects specific to inhalers because the receptors they need to work on are already in the lungs? Specifically, I wanted to try this with a pulverized etizolam tablet.

I highly recommend against manually doing this. The inhalers work because they basically aerosolize the drugs, making them very very fine powder and then mix them with air, which you're not gonna be able to do yourself without proper equipment. Furthermore, I don't think etizolam is water soluble.

There's not really much point imo looking for novel ways to take benzos, since their oral and sublingual BA is already so high.

But what if it were a pure compound of otherwise low bioavailability, would this then be a viable option?

I'm not sure how exactly you're planning to do this, but the powder is going to have to be extremely fine and evenly distributed, the dose can't be more than a few mg, and you're gonna have to find out how the drug is gonna affect your lungs.

Basically, don't do it. I can only see this ending badly with you gasping for air on the floor.

It won't work. Only 10-20% of the dry-powder inhaler drugs enters the lungs, most lands in the mouth and throat.
