I have been using prescribed ir oxycodone 160-180mg total daily for many years for chronic nerve pain. I was recently hospitalized for a major abdominal surgery.
The pain Dr suggested I try switching from the oral ir oxycodone to a 100mcg transdermal Fentanyl patch to be changed every 72 hours. He advised it will cover the chronic pain and the residual abdominal pain while I need it. My question is will putting on a 100 mcg patch be okay and me not having to worry about any bad side effects (like respiratory). I did not understand all of what he tried to explain to me about that. Before I agree to switch I want to know if anyone can tell me if it is safe to take this amount. Thank you for any help in clarifying.

Hi. Sorry to hear you're going through so much.

First, of course, I'm not a doctor and thus can't give medical advice lol, but I'd say with a usage history like yours there'd be no issue switching to the patches. That's no small amount of oxycodone you've been taking, so switching to 100mcg fent patches presents a very small risk of od or other related negative side effects. Whether and how good of a fit the med is for you and your needs, that's between you and your doctor, but in my unprofessional opinion yes the switch would likely be perfectly safe.

Best of luck!

It’s definitely worth trying - some people find fentanyl patches superior for pain. I agree that’s a reasonable, safe starting dose. But it is a different drug, so expect that it will feel different with a different side effect profile. Please let us know how it goes!
