In the face of darkness I stand alone. I know the path I must take, straight and narrow like the edge of a sword. “He who strives never perishes” I have faith in that promise.
When I slip, I weep. Yet when I walk the path I feel true joy. My belief in nonviolence will prevail, for nonviolence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind. It is mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man.
I know it is my role to lead them, these oppressed people. They will find a voice. This leadership bestowed on me was never sought, never actively pursued. It arose from my faithful service, my continual persitence to walk the path.
If we are to ever have peace, if this country is ever to be free, each man must walk his own path, his own sword-edge. Each man must weep and feel true joy. For only upon embracing the precepts of courage, nonviolence and truth will one have true power.
I know they try to stop me. I know they fear me, fear what I my faith and my courage can do. It will not be easy. One day, I believe, they will even kill me. Until then, however, I will walk my path.
My name is Mahatma Gandhi, and in the face of darkness I stand alone.
In the face of darkness I stand alone. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
Separate drinking fountains for whites and blacks. “Colored” balconies in movie theaters. Seats in the back of the bus for blacks. Soldiers needed to protect our children from on the way to school.
The battle to change these conditions, and to win equal protection under the law for citizens of all races is my life’s concern, the struggle for our people to be regarded as equals, before the eyes of the Law as of God.
My journey will not be easy. There will be anger, hatred, arrests, violence. Perhaps they will target my family. Yet I will not bend, will not turn my gaze from injustice. I draw insipration from the great Mohandas K. Gandhi, a man prepared to live his ideals, and die for them.
Perhaps I will suffer his fate, assasination, murdered by blind hatred. Regardless, I will fight for civil-rights. I will enlist those around me who feel the way I do, enlist the hearts and courage of the African-American race. And together we will stand tall, in life and in death, shining beacons of passive resistance, of humanity. This is my journey.
My name is Martin Luther King Jr., and in the face of darkness I stand alone.
In the face of darkness I stand alone. I know in my struggle I cannot rely on others, only myself to follow my principles, my aims, my goals. I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator, through which the truth finds release and those in the right will prevail.
I fight for my people, for the sheep of which I am the shephard, guiding them to greener pastures. This responsibility I accept unflinchingly, always. I am determined.
I know that I will face opposition. They will kill my people, would kill them all if they had a chance, murder them until the street runs red with their blood. This is the price that we may have to pay, the toll that may be exacted. I might die for my cause. I too may be murdered.
Yet I have faith in the complete correctness of my chosen direction. I am confident in success. I have helped my people from the depths of depression, helped them feel pride for themselves once again, a pride which they deserve, as members of the one race. Our conscience is pure, as is our blood. I will not rest until we achieve true power, true glory.
My name Is Adolf Hitler, and in the face of darkness I stand alone.
