I would just like to take a moment to honor George for going out and getting drunk as much as he does.

;)

But srsly, I had an interesting conversation with a DJ in Chicago about how the message needs to shift away from "support! c'mon! support or puppies die! the scene needs you!". Making people feel guilty doesn't really help to further a good vibe. Put together a quality lineup, make sure people know about the event as well as the DJs. Give them a reason to come - a positive reason. Reward those people with a memorable night that will make them want to come again, and maybe even bring more people.

UNLESS, of course, we're having a contest for who goes out the most. If that's the case, I do apologize.

\\\Thanks, Jack.

One of the things Geek did that I liked was the rewarding of repeat patronage. People who E-mailed and showed up to a show got discounts to the next show. Say what you want, but that could help boost loyalty. Along with "anti-PLUR" may come the anti-obligation-to-show-up -- it may be unpossible to have the absence of the former and retain the latter -- and the rewards system (as cheesy as it may sound to some) may be the way to counter that, especially when dealing with performers that the general crowd may not know or particularly care about, no matter how much the promoter(s) know and care about them.

Just thoughts.

I can understand what Geek was doing. 100% We tried working with people and had 1/2 discounted tickets available thru any DJ that was playing our event. Yeah, we missed on a couple of them but we just wanted to pull a bigger crowd and to help start a name for ourselves here, in Indy. We also handed out CD's to everyone that came. Next time we'll work on the free water. ;)

.dubstep.

ZOMG Jack! You lose!!!! haha

Unless, of course, you count your gigs as double points....then you may kill us all. =D

You guys did a decent job promoting it. Don't sweat that. And I like the CD giveaways. I'm always a fan of that stuff.

You can't always control the water situation.....doesn't hurt to ask for next time though.

I thought that was a great idea as well. He even did it on Facebook, offering $ off for marking themselves as attending. A++ idea.

You guys did a good job of getting the word out and incentives like CDs and 1/2 off tickets. My only gripe is the venue. It's nice, but seems so far away. I wish I could have made it, but I was too exhausted.

George, I'm not really sure what "top to bottom" means exactly, but I saw the rest of this message before you edited it. I posted this thinking it was funny or tongue-in-cheek. I also saw it as an opportunity to talk about the contest nature of "supporting". I didn't mean it as a personal blow.

I think the other thread has George feeling ravenous atm. Some things are lost in textlation.

You guys can hug it out. Not sure about those other guys. haha

Yeah, especially if it's promoting the incoming DJs--that's always a great idea!

Yeah, the water complaint, to me, is a ridiculous one. Rare is the event that has free water. In fact, he's lucky that he was able to replenish the water in the bathroom . . . I know some places that would prevent that by making sure an attendant is there.

Free water is a ridiculous request.

LOLOLOLOL!

Well, a venue will always be far for somebody . . . definitely can't please everyone in that regard.

Where was it? 8-Second Saloon? I actually really like that place.

I didn't mean it as a personal blow.

heh.

I would disagree. Water costs them nothing (well, pennies - and less if they use washable plastic cups), and only cuts into bar sales by those that aren't drinking anyway. Charging for a cup of water (not bottled, that makes sense) is the shit shady strip clubs clubs do. If the 70% markup you're doing on your domestic drafts can't cover the $0.05 necessary for a cup of ice water, you're doing something really really wrong.

I didn't even think about the cup-of-water thing.

I still think expecting free water in a night club is as ridiculous as expecting to not smell like smoke; or not be bumped into on a crowded dance-floor; or the music being loud; or there being too much dancing; &c..

If the promoters/owners wanna be cool, that's fine. But to expect it? Or complain when it's not there?

Sorry, it's a club, not your friend's crib.

i see your point, but it also part of (well, it should be) a practice in supplementing DD's or those wanting to just pace themselves.

In a packed club, where everyone is (hopefully) dancing - dehydration and thirst can set in quick. To be that nit-picky over a cup of water is just absurd, and doesn't do anything for the bar/club's image other than they want to squeeze every last dime out of you. I know Rob & the Mel staff are more than accommodating on coffee/water for those that request, and most bars I visit do the exact same.
