I'm going insane living in this house....

That looks like a Schlage. My recommendation:

SCHLAGE KEYPAD

Knowing how to pick a lock has saved my bacon on more than one occasion. Go buy yourself some picks, or make your own.

I love you! Haha I'm going to have to try this out looks like the exact same lock. Thank you so much ill tell you if it works out.

Another thing you could try would be to put some sort of light dusting of talcum powder or something on the keypad keys themselves. Hopefully after the next time he uses it, you can look closely at the keys and see which ones still have powder on them. It's a 4 digit code which means there's 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 24 possible combinations, and it wouldn't take very long to brute force it and run through all of those possibilities until you find the right one.

Just channel your inner MacGyver and you'll be through that door in no time flat.

EDIT: ...or fewer than 24 possible combos if one or more of the numbers is repeated, like 3111. Pardon my math. it's late and I'm less than sober. :) Or you could try the obvious ones, like 1234 and the year of his birth, last 4 digits of his phone number, whatever.

He did do something illegal actually and that was claiming you for taxes when he can't prove that he has supported you in any type of way.

Report him for tax fraud, first and foremost. Don't let him know you've done this until you have one of those nifty "confirmation numbers" as proof of having gotten him in trouble with the IRS, soon to have to go through an audit.

OP, you are is living in his house. It is pretty obvious he can legally claim you as a dependent (assuming you lived there more than half the year). Just because he doesn't give you cash doesn't mean he doesn't provide for you. Also, he is not required to give you any of the tax money he receives from claiming you. I'm not sticking up for this guy but you need to take a realistic look at your options.

The only way he can't claim you as a dependent is if you provided more than half of your own support during the year. Do you have a job? If you don't have a source of income good luck proving that.

Even if you didn't live with him half the year he could likely claim you as a qualifying relative rather than a qualifying child. I suggest you look into the IRS rules for claiming a dependent before you attempt to report him for fraud as it appears he is not committing a crime.

BTW; I work in the tax industry.

1. Call the cops
2. Get a restraing order
3. ???
4. Profit

Jokes aside, you need to get away from him. It is ILLEGAL for him to treat you guys like that. And there is no reason you should have to put up with that bullshit. Call a locksmith, change all the locks in your house, and get a restraining order.

I'm sorry, it seems alot of people aren't reading the thread. This is the stepfathers house. Also, it is not illegal to put a lock on the door of your own property. It is a dick move, but certainly is not illegal. When he attacks you or your family that is certainly illegal, but to be honest the charges won't stick unless you call the police and get it documented immediately after it happens.

If you want to get away from this guy you need to take your mother and sister and move out of his house.

I'll do that then.

actually he did claim us as his children and a lot more. I'm not going to get into the whole tax deal because from everyone (legal) wise they said he committed tax fraud. Also in the marriage they had the choice of filing their taxes together or not but without asking he put down my mother and her social security even though they are married you don't have to file a joint tax return (looked into that).......then the main reason he got cash back was based off of her side (nothing that included him)...he most likely would have not gotten that big of a refund.

I don't think making my mother pay for everything allows him to say he supports us. Even we have to pay for the things we use in the house. He provides nothing....and I'm even on my fathers insurance.

These are 4 requirements to claim a child as a dependent:

Relationship — the person must be your child, step child, adopted child, foster child, brother or sister, or a descendant of one of these (for example, a grandchild or nephew).

Residence — for more than half the year, the person must have the same residence as you do.

Age — the person must be

under age 19 at the end of the year, or
under age 24 and a be a full-time student for at least five months out of the year, or
any age and totally and permanently disabled.

Support — the person did not provide more than half of his or her own support during the year.

You are his step child, you live in his house, and you fit the age criteria. The only toss-up is Support. If you wanted to argue to the IRS you (you personally, not your mother) provided half of your own support you will have to show them proof of your income and receipts for everything including rent payed to him. The fact is though a 17 year old going to high school full time isn't going to make enough money to pay their half of their own costs 99% of the time.

You don't have to like what I'm saying but it is the truth. What he did is not tax fraud and you are in fact his dependent child under the law.

With that being said I'd like to reiterate my previous advice that you should find a way to get your sister and mother out of his house.

My first advice would be to get out. If it's his house there's not much you can do to keep from being subjected to his abuse. Second would be to set him up if he becomes violent again. I won't go into detail, but if the cops already think he's nuts then it wouldn't be too hard. You just gotta make sure there's no witnesses.
