It's best to a specialist doctor who has experience in benzodiazepine and alcohol dependence. The best course of action is to switch to a long acting benzo (such as Valium or Klonopin) and then taper your dosage down very slowly. This is done under the supervision of the doctor.

It is a bad idea for you to try and quit drinking and Xanax cold turkey, serious complications could occur.

Short Answer: Speak to a doctor and be honest with them. Tapering with a longer acting benzo is the best method for withdrawing from both benzos and alcohol. There are lots of threads, do a search for "benzo taper" or "Valium taper".

Best of luck. :)

I think you are more interested in help with your addiction, BDD is more of drug usage questions...this would work best in The Dark Side I think.

So, BDD ---> TDS, let me know if you feel otherwise mods.

Hi redsky, sorry to hear about your troubles. I'm an alcoholic too so I know the difficulties you're facing.

As NeighbourhoodThreat said, it is potentially quite dangerous for you to quit the xanax and alcohol cold turkey, so please don't try and do that. It's possible that you could have some seizures of varying severity if you do.

I have a few questions for you:
Are you ready to quit? Do you have an idea of the timeframe in which you would like to get clean? Have you ever tried to get off benzos or alcohol before? And have you ever had any counselling for your depression and anxiety before?

I was treated for alcohol withdrawal 2 years ago, which involved chlordiazipoxide, and thiamine to prevent Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome.
I don't know if the Librium would help with tapering off Xanex though, but it might be worth consulting your doctor and asking about. Could be a case of the lesser of two evils.
I wish you the best of luck.

Hi

I would really recommend you speak to your dr about this, I think that coming off alcohol and benzos at the same time would probably need a medical detox (he might suggest going in as an impatient for a couple of weeks or so), coming off both simultaneously will likely cause the WD to be more severe than either alone.

Talk to your doctor, you should go through withdrawal with professional medical assistance if possible. It'd probably be better to get off the alcohol first and then the benzos.
