If Im prescribed 10mg of ambien and i want to potentiate xanax...

Regardless of the dose of Xanax you're intending to take, I would break the Ambien in half. It's quite a strong and potentially dangerous potentiation so I would play it safe.

Ambien although not a true benzo, acts in the same area of the brain that the xanax does, this means they will have an additive effect each other. Ambien fairly selectively acts upon GABA a1 while xanax I think hits quite a few GABA receptors across the complex so there should be a pronunced hypnotic effect. For safetys sake I would use half the amount you usually would if taking these drugs alone. Also dont take any other depressant drugs ie. Alcohol and opiates, as three cns depressants at a time is extremely risky even with reduced dosage. Also dont drive and hide away keys and the rest of your meds as mixing benzos and z-drugs is blackout territory and compulsive re-dosing is common.

For maximum effect I would take them at the same time, as their both so quick acting it should only take 20mins to feel them both. From a HR standpoint id take the one you have least experience with first so that you can judge how much of the other one you need, based on how you feel off the first dose.

Yeah I would take them at the same time. Just remember to take considerably less of both than you would were you taking them individually - you can always redose if it's not enough.

yah i took 5mg of ambien instead of 10mg, should i raise it to ten or take more xanax? I hear your not supposed to go over 40mg

Zolpidem (Ambien) should only really be taken at night before bed. Also, I don't think a 5 milligram dose will have much of a bearing on your monstrous 12 milligram alprazolam habit. Mixing benzodiazepines, or benzodiazepins related drugs is usually a waste and provides no additional benefit IMO. The only exception is in co-morbid anxiety disorders where you require a benzodiazepine with a rapid onset for panic attacks and one with a long half-life for generalized anxiety disorder.

You should take it at least 5 hours after the Xanax, since the xanax is the only real benzo of the two, and a potent one at that. It would simply overwhelm the zolpidem to hell. But if you insisted on taking the xanax too, you should wait about 45 minutes, since that's when the comedown from zolpidem usually starts to happen. :)

That's what I was thinking...if you're taking that much xanax the ambien's not gonna have much of an effect. Honestly there's no point wasting it, enjoy the xanax on its own and think about getting off that monstruous dosage yeah? :\ (but remember to TAPER, I got off approximately the same dose CT last year and ended up having a couple seizures. Seriously though, you should really decrease your use).
