i dont have that many artists in this genre.
my fave is Otto Von Schirach. Does Venetian Snares count?
any IDM artist recommendations would be appreciated.

Venetian snares counts if you want him to. Labels like IDM (Which stands for intelligent dance music8) ) are pretty meaningless imo.

But if your interested in stuff that is considered IDM, check out warp records, many of the artists signed to the label make the kind of music I think you may be searching for...

i've been on warp. that's how i found squarepusher and boards of canada.

i'm not a major fan of labels but im not sure if there's a better way

to classify certain genres of electronic music.

warp records is nice, i also like;

autechre -

some cevin key(involution, music for cats) -

wagon christ -

surgeon(idm?) -

richard d james -

look for the miss kitten mix autum cult songs -

fuse 13 (label)

IDM gets me vexed everytime i heard the term.

there's nothing intelligent about listening to different music. music doesn't determine your intelligence.

rubbish rubbish rubbish.

anyway, check out most of the stuff on planet mu.

from there you'll find lots of offshoots no doubt

If house, breaks, techno, trance and drum & bass have somewhat relatively distinct boundaries (give or take). Then what should that catagory of music that most would refer to as IDM be called?

Some people take exception to the 'I' for intellegent. I never thought of it as a derogatory slant on other music though.

I always recommend these producers when the subject comes up ..

there's more music genres out nowadays i know.
i was looking at some subgenres of drum and bass (formarly jungle8) )

the one that made me giggle was "clown-step"

see Andy C's "bodyrock" track.

who decides these haha

thanks for naming some artists, folks.

hey worm... check out cex (some of his older stuff such as the album role model). and b. fleischmann. bogan raszinsky. chris clark.

all are really QUITE good.

btw... the label IDM came from a warp records compilation WAY back in the day titled "artificial intelligence." thats where the term intelligent dance music came from. it has nothing to do with elitism.

:)

Indeed. To add, you can't usually dance to it, and some of it veers outside the bounds of music for most people. :)

True, but I think it has a bit to do with elitism NOW, for some fans.
...
Autechre, my favorite. I enjoy their mid-late period most:

Enave (the most "hip-hop")
Chiastic Slide (the most harsh and robotic)
Cichclisuite (a prelude to their signature unhinged rhythms of later works)

[untitled full length] aka "LP5" (I think this is the right blend of melody and experimentation. Under BOAC is like African Drumming by alien robots. Fold 4 Wrap 5 has a neat auditory illusion...it keeps slowing down...forever! Arch Carrier is beautiful synth-orchestral pop (well, pop for them). The closer (blanking on the name) runs off the deep end but is still warm and inviting. Can you tell that this is my fav?

[untitled EP] aka EP7 - melody begins to recede, timbre and rhythms get more experimental.

Subsequent work gets at first more experimental but then more conventional (for them), but I feel that they lost the "magic" of their prior works, with a few momentary exceptions.

Earlier work is more conventional.

youre definitely not wrong, but the ones who LOVE love it, should know better than to think their music is elite for any reason.

btw... i know you have good taste in music, so consider this more of a validation to your point. ;)

Yup...those who love it must love the music itself...not the image.

fold 4 wrap 5 indeeds ends as any song would. You'd have to hear it. The fact that it is NOT really slowing down leads it to a "normal" conclusion.

thanks laughlin. i have two chris clark CDs and theyre great (tony the tiger style)

yeah i think some idm is hard to listen to sometimes. a lot of people dont get it.

is that why it isnt mainstream who knows? hardcore techno sometimes sounds

like the CD is skipping but i still like it. i think snobbery should be far from music. unfortunately some bastids dont think so. thats on them. no worries
its not gonna kill anyone.

ebola is right on "love the music not the image"

yeah, ebola definitely knows his music. and no problem for the recommendations.

my theory behind why idm (and the like) will never really be mainstream is because people need a beat. granted there is PLENTY of idm that does keep a steady beat, but that beat is often very erratic and complex to a point that nobody wants to bother figuring it out. thats why most of the people who like it do like it (IMO) because they like something to challenge their minds when it comes to music. i like erratic, spastic, glitchy beats because they tweak every part of me that enjoys listening to music.

a lot of people who are in to 'the norm' or whats considered to be pop music, they just dont want to put the effort towards listening to music. theres a difference between listening to and hearing music. i enjoy listening to it.

oh yeah... and that post is supposed to be far from elite btw too... i like a lot of pop music as well. its one of my guilty pleasures hehe. i totally bought the paris hilton cd the day it came out and i've been catching shit for it since that day. i dont give two shits though, i enjoy giving my brain a break sometimes. :D

hehe i know what you mean about giving your brain a break. i used to work
for a Ophthalmologist who read "People" magazine after surgeries. i asked him why he wasn't reading a medical journal or something less brain numbing.
and his reply was the same. i need a break....
