I want to know more about how drugs work

Hey bluelight,

I want to know more about how drugs work. My knowledge so far is very rudimentary - I know the neurotransmitter systems that drugs work on, i.e. cocaine working on dopamine, ecstasy working on serotonin, etc, but beyond that I know nothing. Could anyone suggest books/websites where I can learn more?

Read up about [X-drug] on Wikipedia but, to be sure there's any truth to it, make sure there's a secondary source backing up the claim.
Then, if there's a certain mode of action that you're not familiar with, do exactly the same.

I find Wikipedia only to be correct about 45% of the time.. Not just with information about drugs but about everything. So if you include wikipedia in your research double check the claims like the previous poster said.

Yeah, wikipedia is a good starting point for research, but not a good ending point. Pharmacology is a massive topic, and "how drugs work" is too vague of a question to really be answered. You should start with a specific drug, or class of drugs, and go from there.

There is a massive amount of information on this board regarding how drugs work and how drugs don't work, so don't be afraid of the search feature. Trying to find out more information about pharmacology is how I found this board in the first place, and why I joined it.
