Lets say every time your faced with the slightest pressure or situation you get the panic and get the shakes like you just had 6 cups of coffee and got in a car accident. Shaking bad enough that youll get a comment about it every week or so. What kind of prescription if any does a doctor usually give for this.

just be careful... benzos are very addictive. if you take them only when you're having an attack, that's cool but do not take them regularly as a medicine.. you will find that you spend your days in zombie-mode and can't eat/sleep/do anything without them once you stop.

Depends - a young adult (or old kid) is not likely to get benzos as a first line medication - you ARE more likely to get benzos as you described typical anxiety/panic attacks - but the first thing you will probably get is something like Paxil (a popular one) or Zoloft .. if they don't give you a benzo, THATS OK! Smile and take yer Paxil script home - remember, you want to get better, NOT GET HIGH! Now, call back in a few days and say you have been taking the medication, it works, but it seems to make you MORE NERVOUS and "shakey" .. eventually you will get a benzo, and if you don't fuck up you can get the dose up a little...

Thanks for that last piece of info, PhreeX, that was what I was looking for because I am in the same situation.

propranolol is not an ssri it controls anxiety and headaches- it can be taken once a day- or more- but once you start it you can't go off it without your dr's advice on how to wean off it- it can pretty much make the symptoms worse
but if your having panic attacks i might consider something like zanax (sp??) - taken symptomatically- i have spoken to a few people with this problem and this drug seemed to work for them-

If you have "shakes" it doesn't mean its caused by anxiety 100%. There are disorders where your hands shake uncontrolibly. I have this same problem as well as my father. He takes INDERAL for this problem. This controlls your heart rate , but would be more sucessful then taking benzos. The shakes can start out by anxiety , but when the slightest thing makes you shake , then INDERAL is what they might suggest.

if you go with Phreex's plan, give it at least a wk and a half or so before calling back, or theres probably a good chance that they will tell you that you havent given it long enough. In my experience with mental health, most psychiatrists usually set up apts for follow-ups to check for effects for about 2 wks afterward.

i agree, wait about 2 weeks before saying the paxil or zoloft doesnt work, they'll just tell you to wait....
Peace!

Ask your doctor about Beta blockers - they're pills that help you stop shaking so much, but if you're a smoker, you'll have to stop otherwise they won't work..

How old are you? under 25? They will try you out on paxil or some other anti-d, they might give you a xanax or klonopin for a short period, but will not likely perscribe them for an indefinate period as doctors don't like to get people hooked on benzos.
