I've been told numerous times by numerous club owners and headlining comics, that, particularly for someone who hasn't been in the business all that long, I am in the minority of comics who has learned the "art of bombing gracefully."

You gigs must 'bomb' fairly often then if you've been told 'numerous times by numerous club owners and headlining comics' that you do so gracefully.

^^^^^

Yes, you're right - "numerous times" divided by THOUSANDS of sets must necessarily mean that I bomb fairly often.

Would you like complimentary tickets to watch a comedy contest that fewer than a hundred comics (out of close a thousand who auditioned) have been invited to, so you can judge my "unfunniness" for yourself, or, alternatively, would you prefer to acknowledge that you WISH you could get paid to write jokes for a living, and that your ENVY fueled your most recent post?

I don't think that Conan O'Brien (or his writers) consider what they do art. The conclusion that comedy is art simply because it's popular makes no sense whatsoever.

You're not very good at dealing with bad reactions to your jokes.

Some of them are funny, but when they're not - you act like a bit of a prat.

No offense, but calling them well-written original jokes and art is a bit of a sstretch.

hmmmm, you don't get out much do you? kidding, but seriously, how is comedy not an art? it has no real use other than to entertain and its merit is entirely based on popular opinion

the story wasn't exactly hilarious but I guess that "uncomfortable" comedy is more in vogue these days (which is exactly what I felt while reading it)

film/photography/music/comedy=entertainment=art=self-expression. the most unfunny part in my opinion really is that i shouldn't have to say that. they all go hand in hand, i mean, isn't that obvious?

LOVELIFE has been valued contributer to Words longer than a lot of you have been on Bluelight. Of COURSE jokes have a place in Words. This place is for any original written expression. Words is often seen as taking itself way too seriously so I for one appreciate something light hearted to break up the (sometimes) depressing poems and short stories.

No poster should have to justify their place here, nor should they have to answer to other bluelighters. And why haven't the usual rules of Words applied in here? If you don't like it, DON'T COMMENT, or post constructive criticism to assist the OP in fine tuning their piece. I can't see anything in here except people being rude.

LOVELIFE, I didn't like this joke as much as your other ones but I sure hope you're not listening to the morons in this thread and you keep posting your work.

I don't mean to overly criticize LOVELIFE's comedy. I said some of his jokes were funny. But still, comedy is not art. That doesn't mean to say that comedy cannot be art. Like painting. If I did a painting I wouldn't consider it art because I don't paint. Paint on a canvas isn't the definition of art. Personally I think it's a bit of a stretch to refer to short jokes as art, unless they are really saying something or making some sort of clever commentary. To suggest that everything that comes out of all stand up comics mouths is art is kinda crazy. And also to tell me that I don't deserve to appreciate art. Maybe you bomb out better in real life/real time than on this forum, cause I wouldn't call it all that graceful myself... But then again, what do I know?

But still, comedy is not art.

That doesn't mean to say that comedy cannot be art.

Like painting.

If I did a painting I wouldn't consider it art because I don't paint.

Yet, I *DO* write and tell jokes on a daily basis, and as some semblance of evidence that I'm not doing the equivilent of you splashing paint on a canvas haphazardly (and, btw, *I* wouldn't necessarily jump to the conclusion that THAT shouldn't be classified as "art," but for purposes of this discussion, I'll be happy to use your more rigid standards).

Unlike the fact that you "don't paint," I *DO* actually write, edit, refine, tell, re-edit my jokes on a daily basis.

And if me simply "doing it" isn't enough to satisfy you, it just so happens that I get renumerated in exchange for my jokes the majority of the time, so apparently,
there are people other than me who have, by deciding to pay for it, shown that there is, to them at least, some aesthetic value to my jokes.

So your painting analogy holds no water.

Next.

Paint on a canvas isn't the definition of art.

Personally I think it's a bit of a stretch to refer to short jokes as art, unless they
are really saying something or making some sort of clever commentary."

One man's "I don't care for that joke" is another man's "clever commentary."

Many moons ago, I wrote this joke:

"I quit smoking weed,

Because I wanted to focus.

On being less creative."

Is that "social commentary?"

To many on this board, I'd wager that it is.

To the midnight audiences with whom I share it, it gets an applause break nearly every single time.

Yet, my grandmother probably wouldn't even understand it.

And this is getting off the point - where do you come off deciding that "clever commentary" (which is subjective - but that's getting even further off-topic) is what should govern whether or not something is art?!

How about this gem, courtesy of the late great Mitch Hedberg:

"I don't have a girlfriend.

But I do know a girl who would be really mad if she heard me say that."

Not particularly socially relevant, but in not just my opinion, one of the best Point Of View jokes ever written.

Some of the greatest comics in the world have said that they consider this to be one of the best short jokes ever written, but according to your "definition," it fails.

And also to tell me that I don't deserve to appreciate art.

I shall clarify my earlier statement:

If you don't recognize that comedy is a form of art, then you, in my opinion, don't deserve to enjoy COMEDY.

Maybe you bomb out better in real life/real time than on this forum, cause I
wouldn't call it all that graceful myself...

Again, you're entitled to your opinion, but in my opinion, the fact that I am taking the time to explain my position to you, without resorting to ad-homs speaks volumes with respect to whether or not I am willing to consistently accept constructive criticism with respect to my ART.

But then again, what do I know?

With respect to comedy, apparently, very little.

Thank you.

Now go get back to your cubicle, so that come payday, you can afford to take whatever creature who could somehow bear to be in your presence for a whole evening to a comedy show of mine, and pay me your hard-earned money to hear my brethren and me for our "non-art."

I'll even accept your future apology in advance. :)

You look me in the eye after my set and tell me that what I do isn't art, and steak at Lugar's for you and your date shall be on me. :)

If I lived somewhere near you then I'd accept the free steaks, but unfortunately the cost of the plane tickets makes it a little inconvenient.

Thanks for the thought, though.

Don't you have a link to some taped stand-up?
Like on youtube or something?

I'm curious now.

ok boys, play nice. I'll chalk this off to a heated discussion on the nature of art. Please, no more name calling though.

Wow, insecure much?

^^^^^^^

Why, yes - I do believe you are quite a bit insecure.

Why don't you try to use your seemingly limitless time and energy to actually create something yourself, or, to, at least otherwise add value to this wonderful community, instead of constantly tearing others down?
