I called you today because I missed you
Finally after all the messages I got a response
"Hi, give me a call back"
And in that instant before you answered
All grievances were gone
There was no posturing or scores to settle
Only your friendship
A chance of renewal
And I wanted it so badly because I missed you
And then you answered
Things popped back into their ordered place
A lot of talk of how you are
A little about me
And then…silence
More about you
A smidge about me
And then…shut down again
So I give up
And resign myself to be *your* friend
On your basis
For your benefit only
Knowing it's not really enough
But like many things in life I'm willing to settle
Because it's as much as I've ever gotten from most people
I file back away all the hopes and dreams your message inspired
Resigned that they might have been set afire and permanently lost
By your lack of care
But I miss you
