I know I am probably overreacting, but I am afraid to sleep (respiratory/benzo)

I don't really do anything recreationally, but I've been off the wall reading posts on here all night. I weigh 125lb and I took 2mg Valium last night (I've only taken a benzo - valium - about 3 times in my whole life). Ended up falling asleep about an hour after then woke up to horrible allergies ( I get a really bad cough and congestion year round). So I took an antihistamine and then after realized that they both sedate, so I begin freaking out. I try to lay in bed to watch TV, but I notice my breathing was getting slower with the occasional nod off and gasp awake type thing. I also had some really blurry vision.

I got up and have been up since. (24 hours since yesterday morning - 8 hours since benzo/antihis.). Now I won't plan to be home for another 12 hours and I have to drive for two of them. If I grab some coffee before and after, I figured that I would be good tonight to sleep when I get home... but I just wanted some other opinions (you guys seem to really know your stuff here).

I realize Valium has a half life of up to 3 days or something and the allergy med has a HL of 12 hours. Provided that the levels peaked already and I didn't pass out overnight while conscious, should I be ok to fall asleep tonight? (just didn't know if sleeping makes you more susceptible to resp. depression or anything).

you're totally fine in terms of resp depression from what i know. honestly benzos are bad but as long as youre not mixing them with other strong sedatives or painkillers or alcohol you probably wont have any problems.

Honestly as for the shortness of breath, its probably because you were panicing because this is causing you anxiety.

blurry vision was probably from the antihistamine

you're totally fine to sleep you wont die in your sleep i promise

also im assuming 2mg is for anxiety? after 24 hours even if its metabolites are in your blood its probably not affecting your nervous system

Yeah, it is. My allergies suddenly got really bad this year and the throat swelling, nose stuffiness, and restrictive lung capacity makes me anxious. I'm just usually startled when I get the feeling of being short on breath throughout the day and in bed. Now I am more of a relaxed+startled which has me scared. Usually take the Valium to help calm down when symptoms get really bad like last night.

I just fear that as the drugs wear off I might not feel any different because of lack of sleep so I might be just as anxious about going to sleep then while feeling super tired and out of it if that makes sense.

you probably need to rest more than anything. worrying about it is probably doing you more harm :P

yeah, no need to worry at all

also, you took 2mg valium? are you sure it wasn't 20mg? because 2mg seems like an absurdly small dose of diazepam, which i know is one unpotent benzo.

benzos alone are pretty safe, if you take too much, you'll just black out and then fall asleep. i would even recommend taking the hair of the dog that bit you and taking more valium if you're too anxious about it, but that would be completely anti harm-reduction.

I got a script for some 2mg Valium once. I didn't even know they existed until then haha. According to the charts that say 10mg Valium = 1mg klonopin/1mg Xanax, 2mg Valium and 5mg Librium are the two weakest benzo pills available I believe.

If you just took one antihistamine, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. I mean, officially, from a harm reduction standpoint I feel bad condoning ANY mixture of a CNS depressant like Valium and a potential relaxant like an antihistamine, but even with know tolerance, I'd say you shouldn't worry. Call your pharmacist and ask if it's ok to have them together, that should put you at ease.

Thanks for chiming in. It was definitely 2mg. I just know that I am small and when something like drowsiness comes from a drug, it hits hard (similar to how 2 beers gets me tipsy). Doc suggested though to try a half tablet 1mg or quarter tab 0.5mg so I was only assuming (at 4am) that 2mg was rather potent!

Just kind of alarming to read on antihistamine nasal spray "Do not take with other sedatives or tranquilizers" right after using it.

Ha 2mg got you, eh? Well consider yourself lucky I suppose because most people can't get any benefit from that low of a dose. I've noticed that benzos vary so much from person to person based on a lot of factors. I mean I've known some larger people (300+lbs) that are affected just as well as say a 150lb individual on the same dose of the same benzo. Alcohol tolerance definitely varies by weight but benzos are mysterious.

Thanks for chiming in.

i had to google 'chime in' and i assume you're being ironic. sorry if i was inconvenient man, it was a legitimate question, i just had never heard about a 2mg diazepam before and when i think diazepam and usually think 20-40mg doses are pretty normal, but yeah i'm kinda exaggerated with benzos anyway
