If anyone could find a link, please post!
It was in Atascosa county along I-37

No shit- here's to hoping he gets a "proper" reward for his efforts... probably the wrong forum, but
from the story
"A traffic stop last week in Atascosa County led to the seizure of 74 pounds of heroin—the largest amount of heroin ever seized by DPS troopers during a random traffic stop."
Know your rights. If a cop EVER stops you and does not immediately write you a ticket- ask to leave. Supreme court rulings have shown that they do not have to offer to let you go on their own, but if you ask, they cannot detain you without probable cause. Oversized tires are NOT probable cause! Also, if a cop asks you to search your car SAY NO! If they ask- they do NOT have probable cause. Never consent to a search. NEVER. Your denying a search cannot be used as probable cause!

Dr.groveller, You don't think they won't make up a reason to hold you?
"You were driving erraticaly, sir. Is that marijuana I smell? May I search your car? No? No problem just sit tight till the dog arrives."
Police WILL lie anytime when they need to have a reason for a search.

You don't understand. If a cop asks you to search your car- never EVER say yes. Ask to leave. If they will not let you, you have grounds for appeal. If they bring a dog- they have to show probable cause- saying no to a search is probable cause. Saying "yes" just because they'll do it anyway, is stupid- and what happens most of the time. Yes, cops are the scum of the fucking earth and will lie cheat and steal. But the appeals court system is rather good and figuring this out. Those cameras in the cars work both ways.
I'll track down a great website regarding this shortly

Ah... specifically about roadblocks but germain to any stop by the cops.

Am I sure this is the wrong forum but I just had to comment on all this crackhead advice.
"If a cop asks you to search your car- never EVER say yes."
I agree with this statement.
"Ask to leave. If they will not let you, you have grounds for appeal."
This is not automatic grounds for appeal. You can be detained without probable cause for a "reasonable" amount of time. You should not immediately ask can you leave if the cop just walked up to your car and you have bricks of heroin in the trunk. That kind of behavior arouses suspicion pretty quickly.
"If they bring a dog- they have to show probable cause- saying no to a search is probable cause."
They do not have to show probable cause to request a canine unit to sniff the exterior of your car; they only need suspicion. If the dog smells something (don't they always?) then that is probable cause to then search your car-no appeals here. And saying no to a search is not probable cause per se (in and of itself.)
"Yes, cops are the scum of the fucking earth and will lie cheat and steal."
You seem to forget that cops also protect society from the scum of the earth (murderers, rapists, ravers). There are corrupt people in every organization ever created, cops are no different. Nobody likes getting busted with drugs but you know what the consequences of your actions can be and are fully responsible for them.
"But the appeals court system is rather good and figuring this out. Those cameras in the cars work both ways."
Keep the faith brotha.

Did you check out the fucking website I left? Yes, there are lots of details. Reasonable amount of time is about 20 minutes. Crackhead advice huh? So I should have said, may have grounds for appeal. The point is, far to many people think you have to let a cop search if they ask. My main point is to ALWAYS say NO. Is that crackhead advice?
Is it crackhead advice to ask if you may leave?

You should not immediately ask can you leave if the cop just walked up to your car and you have bricks of heroin in the trunk. That kind of behavior arouses suspicion pretty quickly.

I said if they are not writing you a ticket or seem that they are headed that way, I think it's prudent to ask, "Am I being detained for a specific reason. If they have none, ask to leave. And yeah, if you're driving around with bricks of heroin- I'd say it's better to be confident and up front. The longer you stay, the more chance there is that they'll end up searching.
Good luck.

"If they bring a dog- they have to show probable cause- saying no to a search is probable cause."

Mis quote- I said, "saying no is NOT probable cause"

They do not have to show probable cause to request a canine unit to sniff the exterior of your car; they only need suspicion.

I believe the case law is murky on that...

If the dog smells something (don't they always?) then that is probable cause to then search your car-no appeals here.

True, but you should do your best not to let it get to this point. And yes, the dog WILL pick up the smell no matter what... that's why the use them.
And saying no to a search is not probable cause per se (in and of itself.)
Read again- I said this myself. Maybe it is you that has been hitting the pipe...

"Yes, cops are the scum of the fucking earth and will lie cheat and steal."

Yeah, yeah, and not all priests are baby-rapers... whatever. I have to seriously question the motives of people that become cops. There's a lot of psychological evidence out there that doesn't paint a rosy picture of "the boys in blue" I'll admit, I'm a cop hater. I hate the mother fuckers. They get everything they deserve. Fuck 'em. Bullet to the head... for each and every one of them. As far as protecting and serving... just doesn't work out that way in real life. Nice xmas story 'round the fire, but life just isn't that way. I'd rather protect myself and my family with my Glock than rely on some civil servant.

"But the appeals court system is rather good and figuring this out. Those cameras in the cars work both ways."
Keep the faith brotha.

So what specifically is so cracked-out about my advice? Check out the website- it has some good tips on what to do/not to do. Do not be belligerant- that's a no-no. But you know, the smartest pikes in the lot aren't usually running the drugs- they're hiding behind the stacks of money. And the runners definitely aren't reading this board... no, this was more of an offering of general advice on how to deal with big fat fucking pigs... know your rights, use them to your advantage. That's why we have them.
Blatant misuse of "probable cause" can be exploited by a good lawyer... I know several and keep their cards handy in my wallet. I tend not to drive around with huge bricks of H... but I definitely ride around with some. When I do, I don't speed... that's for damn sure. And I don't hang around roadblocks for any more time than necessary! That was the point.

Pwhor guys! Calm down!
Everone is entitled to their opinion, and if Dr.groveller wants to hate cops, let him.
Although, i'd tend to agree with AbraMontague. I have maximum respect for the police, and theres no way i'd want to be a cop. Think about it, what a shit job.
You get no respect, are hated by a percentage of society for what you represent, not necesseraly what you as a person believe.
All in all, i'd hate to be a cop, but as AbraMontague pointed out, they DO protect us from the other aspects of society that we may not like.
meh, just my 0.2c
